Mandatory registration of abode

What do you think of this idea? I'm not talking about a neo-Nazi facist state where ID cards are required, I simply mean that registration of one's current address should be compulsory with a card issued to people who have registered as an easy and reliable proof of address (which, again, does NOT have to be carried). In Ireland, utility bills etc. are used, these can be easily faked.

In some countries in Europe, registration within 3 weeks of moving to a new address is mandatory.

If this were implemented here, we'd have an exact figure of the amount of people living in particular towns, facilities could thus be better planned on a more real-time and regular basis than the census.

This will also stomp out potential voter fraud from being registered in more than one constituency and also stomp out possible welfare fraud.

I'd like to see this implemented here, with exceptions given to members of the travelling community, it wouldn't be feasible or fair to impose this on them

How would you prove to the authorities where you lived?

Yes, I'm going to go to my solicitor to get my mortgagee papers for this! A non-runner.

I remember in the bank a few times opening accounts and as proof of address people giving me envelopes with hand written addresses on them.

Clamouring for yet more Continental-style Ausweisen will not solve anything, unlike making proper and coherent use of the data that's already there, i.e. census and register of electors.
