Both Self-employed & PAYE work - Register for VAT?

    Hi all,
I'd appreciate your help on the following - I'm an actor & writer, self-employed; income tends to fall into three streams: self-employed actor income, some self-employed writer income (exempt from income tax) and PAYE actor income. How my income is divided between PAYE and self-employment can vary wildly, it all depends on how each company I work with is set up.

What I'm wondering is if the PAYE income counts towards the threshold for registering for VAT, or just my self-employed income? As far as I'm aware I can't charge VAT to a company that puts me through the payroll. (In reality I can't charge VAT to anybody, it's not the done thing in this industry - so if I am over the threshold it represents a major financial hit)

    I''d appreciate anyone's advice!

PAYE income doesn't count towards the VAT threshold.
