    Hi,

Looking to get openDNS setup on my eir F2000 router to block the old adult stuff for the kids etc. Had the first evidence they were searching Boobs in the search history.

Anyway doing a quick search I think eir do not support different DNS servers but that dose not mean that you cant do it. My question is

How do you do it on the F2000?
    What are the potential problems?
Are there better solutions eg net nanny etc

    Thanks

    Its the right solution
Just change the DNS settings to the servers provided by OpenDNS.
Only potential gripe is the possibility of slightly higher latency when resolving, but it shouldnt be perceptible.

Can you let us know if this works, also have efibre and need to filter the router. TIA.

Yes it seem to work ok enough and easy to set up. Problem is though if you look something up it will give you the search results alright but when you click on the link it will block it, great, but if you click on images say in google chrome it will still show you the full content.

Is there anyway around this? besides being logged into your google account and have some filters on google chrome there but that would be easy to bypass just log out of your google account.

Alright I seem to be having a few problems with this and I dont know have I messed things up a bit but my speeds have seemed to dropped off since I started using openDNS.

I have Eirs FTTH 1Gb/s package and when I did tests before I changed the DNS settings I was getting in the 700-800s Mbs not a problem and on my xbone I would get in the 600s all wired with CAT6. Now since I changed to openDNS I am getting only around 300 but sometines in the 200's, but my xbone is only getting 120 and the rare occasion about 200Mbs. I have also seen single digit download speeds... on the xbone

Anyway I have changed back to the old DNS settings and still my speeds are down and its showing no real improvement.

Question is and I cant remember when I changed it first, does eir FTTH run a static DNS? I dont know did I only check the static DNS box just to get the openDNS servers I noted down the Eirs DNS servers before I changed and this is what they are.

    IPv4 primary DNS server:
    159.134.0.1
    IPv4 secondary DNS server:
    159.134.0.2

Any thoughts? Can messing about with the DNS servers effect download speeds?

I have reset the F2000 but not a factory reset, bit nervous of that, I also havent called eir yet want to get a few facts first.

Could you use open dns on a spare old router just for the kids and just not give them the wifi password for the eir router?
The eir router then can run all the stuff that needs the speed and you get to enjoy the speed you're paying for on you're own browsing as it will be using Eirs dns settings
