I'm going to acknowledge it by building a gulag and imprisoning everyone who disagrees with me.

With the passing of communism into the dustbin of history as an ideological alternative to democracy it is time to do some accounting of its human costs. Few would deny any longer that communism--Marxism-Leninism and its variants--meant in practice bloody terrorism, deadly purges, lethal gulags and forced labor, fatal deportations, man-made famines, extrajudicial executions and show trials, and genocide. It is also widely known that as a result millions of innocent people have been murdered in cold blood.

Communism has been the greatest social engineering experiment we have ever seen. It failed utterly and in doing so it killed over 100,000,000 men, women, and children, not to mention the near 30,000,000 of its subjects that died in its often aggressive wars and the rebellions it provoked

I'll probably commemorate it in exactly the same way as I commemorated whatever it was happened somewhere 100 years ago today.

I suppose I could raise the Bolshevik flag over my Facebook profile picture and leave it there for a year or so.

As early as December 1917 the Bolsheviks were light years ahead of the Anglo world in giving women equality, rights to initiate divorce and to have access to free healthcare and a minimum income.

    An extraordinary woman:

    Alexandra Kollontai

For all the giving out people do about communism one wonders how much of the welfare state from the late 1940s, or indeed Roosevelt's New Deal in the 1930s, would have been introduced without the ideological threat of communism/socialism.

For all the giving out people do about communism...

We're not supposed to speak of the gains that the Soviet Union 'engineered'... spectacular increases in levels of literacy/education, universal health care, poverty amelioration, first class infrastructure, feudalism-to-industrialisation, women's participation in civic life, life-expectancy, child mortality etc etc.

Hiding my jewellery and Giving Out about Communism.

Actually I'll spare a thought for all of the victims. None of whom deserved any of it.
I've recently spoken to a descendant of the Romanovs.

Every filthy grey cloud of misery has a silver lining. Shame it was bought in blood.
Life under Nazi rule was better for many people. There is always a reason why people tolerate and even participate in wickedness.

I think we should commemorate it by sentencing anyone that uses the scum bag term "yiz" in written context to 10 years hard labour in siberia

We are. It's just that most people also include the all important negatives which give the whole situation context

Anything can be cherry-picked, e.g. Saddam in Iraq built up a large middle class, universities, new roads, infrastructure projects..

Like I said, context is important comrades

I'll watch 1984 to remind myself what abject horror an authoritarian regime would be like.

Then I'll go shopping in a big supermarket and marvel at all the choice of fresh produce on the shelves before buying fresh bread without having to queue for it. Return to my privately owned home and be grateful for living in a free society that doesn't see the need to manipulate its citizens and control their world view from the cradle to the grave.

Yeah, communism was ****ty and lived a violent, destructive and all too long existence before the very people it sought to subjugate overthrew it in a remarkably peaceful and complete manor.

My understanding of Communism is that in its pure and theoretical form it is a worthy alternative. However the difficulties arise, when you introduce the human element into the theory.

I'll play the Soviet and Russian foreign anthems. Look at a few Lenin videos on Youtube maybe a documentary, know the period well enough. Look up the other luminarias of the revolution familiar with Trotsky, Zinoviev & Kamenev. Interesting characters. So important to contemporary world.
