How to ask for a pay rise?

    Hi

Looking for a bit of advice.

I currently work in a large MNC – been there for over 9 years. I work in a highly pressurised role, with a lot of demands put on me, and a lot of responsibility ie not an easy role – challenging, but I enjoy it, most of the time.

I know I am highly regarded – have been told it in my various reviews, and have been told recently that if ever I was considering leaving my role – to come and talk to the relevant director beforehand ( this came from the Director). I have also received an award internally for the work that I have done to date.
I do have peers who do a ‘similar’ role – on paper, but we are quite specialised in what we do – so, even though we have the same title – the specifics would be very different.

Thing is – I am currently earning X – but I have no idea, whether this would be on a par with my peers or not. I have been told, I am in the higher range for my role type – but again, its quite a specialised role, so I have nothing really to base this on, other than what my boss says.
In addition to the above – there are certain roles within my organisation that are banded – benefits are better etc etc. I am not currently banded - although certain people outside my circle have made assumptions that I am, in things they have said. Normally, banded roles are for ‘a certain’ level – but this is a bit ambiguous too.

Question – should I ask what I need to do to become ‘banded’ – given I haven’t had a salary increase ( excepting circa 3k over the last 9 years)? I am (generally) a very compliant employee – just do what I have to do, get up and go home – but they always know the job is done and the job is done well – there is no ‘minding’ of me, per se. I don’t like to come across as entitled, but in some ways – I think I may be due a bit more in terms of acknowledgement of what I have done to date.

Would this come across as greedy, or becoming ‘too big for my boots’? I do get a sense as well – that I will get nothing if I don’t ask! Any advice on how best to approach this would be appreciated too!

Easiest thing to do is bring it up in your next review. Be prepared to show the value that you bring to the business and the knowledge that you have that others don't.
Could you move to another company and do the same role? I recently moved jobs and got a 15k pay rise. Might be worth exploring the market to see what you're worth.

Before negotiating for a raise you should carefully time whenever you are scheduling the meeting. Aim to have the meeting when some major deadline could be affected and your departure would be a showstopper. Also it might be no harm to drip news into the gossip pipeline that you are dissolusioned or something.
If the powers that be suspect that you handing in your notice is imminent and that your loss would be crippling then you would be in a very strong position and they might be throwing cheques at you.
