Pajero Exec Vs Landcruiser Business & Others

I'm looking at changing up to a proper 4*4 from a Toyota Rav.

It's the wife's car mainly, but we need something for towing and the Rav is an avensis with big wheels basically.

Does anyone have any experience of the Pajero Exec or Landcruiser Business? I was looking at the Landcruiser, but PCP is not available in it, so need to go regular finance. It comes in the price (monthly repayments) of a BMW x5, Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, MB GLE all on PCP deals.

I know that you never own the car under PCP, but monthly payment costs are my main concern at the moment and I will likely move the vehicle on once the warranty expires anyway.

The Pajero Exec appears a lot more affordable, with some nice extras like a sunroof, 5 year warranty and reversing camera. Does anyone have one and would like to comment? Especially when it compares to the Landcruiser.

    Thanks.

Should also add, mileage won't be big: 15k KM per year at most.....

If I got 5 years trouble free motoring and then change her I would be happy......

Either or, the new landcruiser with the 2.8 burner will be a bit more fuel efficient. Not much between them otherwise. The landcruiser will have a better resale value though. The uncle got a new landcruiser a few weeks ago and first impressions were it appears light enough underneath and the body panels lack strength imo.

Thanks Kay 9, good to know re the LC. I'm going looking at both models tomorrow so will pay attention to that.

So far I'm edging towards the Pajero. Appreciate the LC holds it value better and is likely a better 4*4 - but the price is just a tad too high, and a few more extras with the Pajero.

If you don't qualify for commercial tax you're looking at over 2 grand a year motor tax for an automatic landcruiser

yeah :) any N1 commercial taxed as a passenger is on the CC rates, regardless of year.

Does farming activity count as commercial tax?

And - can't I just tax it commercially, who would say anything? I know there was some uproar a while back about the Gardaí supposed to check if it was for legitimate commercial reasons, but I've never heard of anyone getting caught.

write your PPS number as a VAT number, get the declaration stamped, say nothing, be grand.

I actually have a VAT number, so if that's all that is required - then should be sound!

Just need to chat to the revenue to see if they will allow it as a valid expense.

If you are vat registered you'll be fine. Landcruisers hold their value a lot better than pajeros. But they also cost more. Are you thinking new or used?

Going new for 171 - I looked at used, and unless I was able to get a decent second hand one very cheap (as a 2nd car) it's not worth my while (which I can't). I still need to change the wifes car anyway.

This will be the main family car, so I want something with a warranty, reliable, etc.

Took both the Paj & LC out for a rip a few days ago. Both cheap and tacky enough inside. Serious spec in the Pajero, but it has to be said the LC is a better drive. Paj is a lot nosier, but I found it a little more powerful. I'd say the LC is better off-road, and has auto/fulltime 4WD, where the PAJ has a 2nd gear stick.

I think I prefer the look of the LC too, but there is a pretty serious cost difference - but fully appreciate the LC will be easier shifted and have a higher value later on.

The 5 year warranty/150k on the Paj is another good point. But the Paj is pretty dated looking, so my be well sick of it in 5 years time.

Need to do the sums on it...........

The other kicker is that for similar monthly payments, I would be into GLE, x5, Q7, XC90 & Discovery territory on PCP. Granted, wouldn't own the car but worth looking at.

I hear where you are coming from on the dated look of the pajero, they haven't changed since 2007 and even the it wasn't much of a change from the 2000 model. Don't discount the pajero in the off road bit as it probably is better as it comes standard with diff lockers. Have you considered the new ford edge, it has a towing capacity of 2000kg

Haven't looked at others really, might look into Ford & maybe VW as well.

Ran the numbers on the LC Vs Paj - and based on rough estimates of resale value - the Paj will actually cost a tiny bit more over 3 years. Not an exact science - but shows that I may be better off trying to manage the larger payments.

Problem is the tax, at 1800 euro a year not many people would be interested in it. Also with the new regs its impossible to crew cab it. You'd be lucky to get 5-6000 for it i'd say

The VRT refund might be a good bit if you were to export it.

    Just checked, rebate is €2700.
