Raising attic floor

I am looking to increase the height of my attic to add in another layer of insulation and then put down boards for flooring. It's a terraced house.

I am planning to buy long lengths of 5x2, lay them perpendicularly then use 18mm osb to floor. I have downlighters which I have covered with thermo hoods coming up in to the attic from the ceiling below.

I'm going to lay 100mm earthwool. and am thinking 5x2's would be better than 4x2's so floor is not right down on top of insulation? Would this be right?

Also I don't know whether or not I should support the 5x2's using joist hangers either end or not. I would prefer not to, if I didn't need to, but if that's what has to be done it has to be done.

Anyone have any experience or knowledge of this? And could help me out,

    Thanks

Can you post a pic of your existing attic and show it's current build up?
What you explain sounds complicated for what should be an easy job. Just add buttons to the tops of existing joists to increase height and insulate accordingly.

Op before you do anything make sure the structure can take a floor

Also, be careful to ensure that you maintain 50mm ventilation gap at eaves when the additional layer of insulation gies on.

how would I know if the structure could take the floor??

I'm in a terrace so walls either end of attic, I just assumed using joist hangers drilled in to the walls would take a lot of the extra weight.

I saw them buttons before but I am looking to be able to walk on it if needed.

    Talk to your engineer.
