03 micra flashing check engine light

Driving home tonight with the 03 micra 1.0, just picking up speed on the M1 and settled in at 110km/h when I felt a slight, but obviously noticeable, drop in power, and as I took my foot off the petrol the check engine light started flashing. Must've flashed about 5 times and then went off.

Took it slow from there, and once home could feel the car stuttering a bit, and seems as though its miss firing on a cylinder.
Its sunday night so not much I, or anyone else can do about it right now. At best I can get some insight on here as to what it could be.

Worth mentioning, one of the headlamps was dead this morning so I changed the bulb today and topped up the oil while I was at it, since its been using some oil.

About 20 months ago the timing chain was done, and about 3 months ago had to replace the oxygen sensors. These were done by a reputable mechanic.

A quick look in my Hayes manual shows it could be 1 of a few things. Anything from blown head gasket, to a spark plug acting up. If its the latter then I can do it myself, the former probably for my mechanic, whom I intend to visit tomorrow.

I started her up again a while after getting home, and no check engine light comes on, but still stuttering.

Anyone here have a similar experience and what had to be done to fix?

Sounds like a coil pack. You would need a fault reader to see why it is showing up.

    Thanks for the reply.

Fully intend to ask my mechanic to check the fault code. I assume the most recent fault will still show up even though the light isnt still on?

I could live with it if its the coil pack, doesnt seem too expensive for the part itself. Going to have to check if its a DIY or not though.

Yes it will show as an historic fault.

You were right, coil pack and spark plug were gone on one of the cylinders. Both have been replaced and theres a slight improvement but still not as it should be, so more work to be done tomorrow. Hoping there wasnt too much additional damage done.
