    Hi all,

I'm new to boards and couldn't find an answer in the existing posts.

I have an opportunity of taking a shift job working alternate weeks of one week days 0800-1500 Monday-Friday and alternate week of evenings 15:00-22:30 Monday-Friday. All weekends off.

    My questions are,

What is this shift called or defined as and what is the shift cycle length(7days or 14days)?

What rate of pay should this cycle be?

What holiday entitlement do I have based on this cycle?

I appreciate any feedback, thank you.

This is a 14 day rotating cycle . No one can answer the rate of pay as it could be basic wage with a shift bonus. You would still only be entitled to the ststory amount of holidays... that's 160 hours per year on full time hours. However as you're not working full time you would have to calculate it down.

Its a 2-cycle shift - the 2 places i worked that used that pattern paid a shift premium of 20% for it but there is no guarantee or entitlement to shift premium and it varies from place to place

    Thanks folks

Just to add, I used to work in a place that did 3 cycle shift 12am-8am, 4pm-12am and 8-4pm. For years we were paid a weekly shift allowance of 15% I think it was.
My employer cut the nightshift so we only worked 8-4 and 4-12. He also cut the 15% shift allowance and was within his rights as 8-4pm and 4-12 are not considered to be 'unsocial hours'. We were still working the same amount of hours for 15% less pay.
    Check your contract.

Worked a similar shift for years and was 20% premium, I use to hate the evening shifts because mostly waiting around to go to work but good if your an early riser and making the most of the time off

the rate for 2 cycle has always been 20% and for 3 cycle its 25%, for 4 cycle its 33.33%. Sounds like your wanker boss was ripping you off

Lots of companies out there changed the shift rates paid in the last few years
strangely they are the same ones struggling to hold onto and recruit staff
and some have had to revert to the rates you stated

I worked a 4 cycle for years the rate was 30% their 3 cycle was 25% and 2 cycle was 20% I also worked in a factory that operated a 3 way cycle and didn't give shift. Now where I work if you work night you'll get 30 % bit on the 2 shift cycle you get 20% I'm not quite sure if what you're saying is what the going rate is but I'm not quite sure it's a legal thing.

That wouldn't surprise me if we were getting ripped off. The man was an absolute chancer. The place is gone bust now thank God.
I remember years ago when Bertie Ahern was still in charge of the country. Everybody got a tax break so were gaining a few quid extra every week. All except the foreign nationals who were new in the country and a little green.
This went on for a few months until they found out he was short changing them. They all went into his office and pulled him up on it. He **** himself and backdated all the money owed.
Like I said an absolute chancer and I'm delighted he's gone bust.
