I have M category on my full car licence. I and the missus drive a 50cc moped on this licence ,,sometimes she is pillion and we spin around ...all well.

We are thinking a 125 cc might be better ..a little extra power ...esp. when the 2 of us are on it....

(We have little interest in anything more 125cc)

I applied for a theory test today for both of us. We will most likely do the lessons just for the A1 its the twist and drive we like...

    Now the question...
Can we do the motorbike test on a 125 ccc twist and drive type bike?
We intend to do test the minute it can be done (6mths) we will do all the necessary lessons as quickly as we can..

If we trade up from the 50cc moped to a 125 cc moped ....can we still spin around with her as a pillion? or are you prohibited from carrying a pillion while an "N" licence holder.....both of us will be on the driving same type of licence..as we will be doing the lessons together... thks

Can answer part of your question. When I had a 125 cc and needed the higher category 10 years ago I hired a 250cc bike for the test. As the range is 50 cc to 125cc you can do the test on the 50cc and can use the licence for any cc up to 125cc thereafter.

Oh that's class. So if I apply for the A1 licence. I can use my 50cc moped for the test. That's great altogether, I just need to do the necessary lessons.. I presume I can use the moped for the lessons ..(which will save a few quid too)...Just hypothetically...(as You say 50cc to 125 cc is covered A1) ... if someone's moped has the restrictor removed ..I would not imagine that matters as it would still be under the 125cc is that correct , do you think?

Unfortunately, bikes are a pretty arduous deal these days. It's virtually the same rigmarole to get started on a scooter as it is for the full A.
I applied for a theory test today for both of us.

Are you sure you both need to? If either of you completed the car theory test between 2001 and 2006, there's a very good chance you won't have to take the 'AM' (motorcycles and scooters) theory test.
    Now the question...
Can we do the motorbike test on a 125 ccc twist and drive type bike?

Absolutely. If you bring like a vespa or a Burgmann 125 to the test, you'll get a full A1 with the 78 restriction denoting automatic transmission only.

However, bear in mind that there's nothing stopping you hiring a school bike from your instructor for the test at little cost. My instructor let me borrow one of his for free actually.
We intend to do test the minute it can be done (6mths)

I'm open to correction on this but I think that since you both have full car licences, you won't have to wait six months. I may be wrong.
we will do all the necessary lessons as quickly as we can...

Well, you can do them over a weekend. It's 16 hours of training. This alone will set you back about €500 each or so if you do them as a pair. It would be more if ye did them one-to-one separately.
If we trade up from the 50cc moped to a 125 cc moped ....can we still spin around with her as a pillion? or are you prohibited from carrying a pillion while an "N" licence holder.....both of us will be on the driving same type of licence..as we will be doing the lessons together... thks

You wont be N drivers as you both have pre-existing full licences- you can only be a novice once :)
I presume I can use the moped for the lessons ..

If you complete IBT on your AM scooter, you will walk away with the AM IBT cert which will only entitle you to take the AM test- it looks like you'll be using school bikes to get the A1 IBT cert (or higher) and you'll be much better off, IMO.
if someone's moped has the restrictor removed ..I would not imagine that matters as it would still be under the 125cc is that correct , do you think?
    Paddy.

If you end up with the A1 test, you'd be covered (from a licencing point of view) to drive an unrestricted scooter. I would be very concerned about insurance though.

oh thks I see about the insurance ok...Just to summarise ..we wont have to wear the N tabards ...just the L tabard until we do test?

After the test , say we do the A1 ...and pass ....can I carry a pillion straight away?

WE just really want to continue on as we are ..spin around together ....just on a slightly bigger scooter.

ps thanks for going to all the efforts to answer queries individually

    paddy

ps I rang the \NDLS earlier and ya we have to the theory test ...we are not spring chickens lets say lol

    Correct.

    Yes indeed.

I say find a local instructor and speak to them. Just be open to the idea of leveling up because the reality is that it's nearly the same effort and you may get used to the idea of the likes of a Burgman 400 which is an A2 licence bike but it's also a twist and go scooter but it gives you more comfort and road capability.

    No problem :)

I did have a bike years back but older licence permit will not suffice. Thanks for reminder
