Has any one any experiecne of building while living out of the country?
    Is it doable?

Was thinking of taking a career break and possibly going to Dubai and starting the self build process as everything else is in order? The whole process seems so slow and time consuming and I would be back in Ireland for the whole summer and Christmas for any other decisons that can't be made by email etc.

What do you guys think ?

My Sister and Brother in Law did this while they were both working in the USA - had relatives keep an eye on things until it was finished and then rented it out until they returned home. Certainly possible but it will delay some of the decisions and choices as you're not "down the road" and the time difference limits when you can be contacted a bit plus call costs etc. You should have a very trusted builder on your side plus a friend / relative to keep an eye on things. It's your money at the end of the day - get a good warranty as they will also inspect the property to their satisfaction as once it's built it can hide a LOT of defects otherwise.....

thanks !!! Great to know that it is doable!!

The whole process is so slow we were kinda saying why not.

Just wondering about any logistical issues e.g. if I take out a mortgage with the bank , do I tell them my plans? Obviously wouldn't put myself in a situation where I couldnt pay the mortgage- hence why working in Dubai for a year seems ideal !!!

I'm not sure how they tackled the mortgage but I think they returned home to sign the paperwork etc but this was 15 years ago so banks may be more careful now? If you get the mortgage approved before you leave I can't see them having a problem as long as you make payments. You'll still need an Architect and Solicitor to approve payment milestones etc. Maybe consult a financial advisor as you want to get hold of that first time buyers grant also if you can so timing here may be worth looking at.....
