2005 Yaris, over 300,000km

Looking to buy a used car. Found a 2005 Yaris that is in good condition, drives well, has a full Toyota service history but has over 300,000km on it. Dealer is asking for 1,500Euro for it which for a car with a lower mileage would be great for a 05 Yaris but the mileage is really putting me off. Anyone any input on this?

    Thanks 😊

Any idea if it has an NCT?

Water pump might need to be replaced at that mileage if it hasn't already been done and it's possible major components like gearbox, clutch or suspension items could need replacing in the near future. The more history you have of parts recently replaced the less should need to be done to it.

At that money you're usually lookong at 02 Yaris. The 05 has the big benefit of having ABS. 300kkm is a bit severe though. They can do mileage but id still be worried.

In the great scheme of things 300k km is about 186,000 miles which is to be expected on a car now approaching 12 years old. The main factor is how the car was treated and maintained by it's former owners. In Ireland many cars lead very hard lives in the way they are treated and where maintenance is not seen as very important.

But you're never going to get much in the way of value or warranty from buying a car in that price range from a dealer. Cars being sold by dealers in this price range just about cover their profit margin and not much else. You should look at buying privately.

Most 05 Yaris would be under 130km though. Even the wife's 00 only had 62k miles which wouldn't be unusual.

NCT until the end of January 2017. Yeah OK good to know, it has that service history so I'll have a look out for those things. Thanks!

It could be put forward for the test now and be done till Jan 2018

The decimal point must be in the wrong place.

Do you reckon I could ask the dealer to do that for peace of mind or take the chance and do it myself? I think the place gives a warranty. As far as I can remember it's only for 30 days after purchase but would be enough time for me to put it through the nct.

Not to sound too biased, but the car is well capable of that. that's still a mk1 Yaris which is pretty simple car in terms of engine/gearbox/suspension etc.

If it has a full history like you suggest, has a reasonable amount of previous owners, bodywork looks "genuine" and it drives ok, i'd take a punt on it, particularly if you could get a whisker more off the asking price.

It effectively has no NCT but it's unlikely to fail on anything major if it's been maintained. if you had to do a few simple bits in January, headlight alignment, drop links etc, it'd still be a cheap car.

IF it was treated right by it's previous owner and you continue to be kind to it, it could probably do that mileage again.

You could offer to pay the €55 to do the nct now and if it passes you buy it. If it doesn't you just lose the €55 if you don't want the car.

From the sellers point of view, you can see that a fail sheet is a bad thing and he'd be knowingly selling a defective vehicle if it fails. Not knowing if the car has faults is a better position for him to be in.

I wouldn't expect any level of warranty or aftercare on a €1500 car, regardless of whatever rights I might have.
