Dish on house

    Hi all,

I've recently bought & moved into my own house.
There was already a dish on the front on the property, all wired up and I have my channels coming in via satellite tuner on tv.

Just the other day, I looked at the dish properly, noticed 2 white and 2 black cables from LNB, one set going to living room and the other set seem to go to house next door (they go up into the gutter and disappear into next door's attic space)

That house is currently vacant and for sale, so not currently in use.

Surely I can have full use of all connections on the LNB if I wanted sat tv in bedrooms as the dish is on my property?
Should/could I unplug the cables going to the next house?

    Confused...

Can't see why not once it's vacant. If anyone asks plead innocent!

    Yes do.

In fact I heard before it's dangerous for 2 homes using the same dish as both will have seperate power supplies and potential for problems as a result.

Power supply to a dish? This is new.

There is no problem and I disagree with the power issue a previous poster warned off.

All you have to do is when it comes to the time that when you want to connect another line for yourself just disconnect the lines occupied in favours of yours.

Actually, if it's the case that the other lines are not in use it might be an idea to disconnect them now just in case your new neighbour might use them.

True, but it's the first time I heard power actually goes to the dish.

Not to the "dish" but to the LNB 13V and 19V signals are typically used to switch the LNB between various states. (Something new learned everyday :) )

There can be issues with earth looping between different houses, and there is also the likelihood of being on separate phases, so it is not safe to connect the same LNB to two separate houses unless the installer knows what safety measures to put in place etc.

It's safer to remove the unwanted cables, especially if the other house is currently unoccupied they won't need them and can put up their own dish later.

    Definitely disconnect the cables.

There is a potential shock or fire risk with having a connection between two different electricity supplies. It can also be an insurance issue.

If the dish is definitely on your property then disconnect the 'neighbour's' cables and move them off your property.

On the other hand, if the dish is on a boundary there might be ownership issues which you need to be aware of.

Definitely disconnect the other house. As has been mentioned it is potentially dangerous if not installed correctly. You may also want the other outputs yourself for a second TV location later.
It was probably a friendly arrangement between the previous owners to minimise clutter on the houses. I have even heard of cases where neighbours connected themselves up without the dish owners consent or knowledge.

    That is definitive.
Disconnect neighbours cables and place them within neighbour's boundary which should be easily done based on your drawing.
