Hey, looking for a good broadband, my parents currently have Virgin Media in our house which is horrible, I live up in the attic and the modem is downstairs so its shocking for me, and I have brothers and sisters who are constantly on it also, so i'm looking to get myself a very high speed modem for about 40-60 a month, just the broadband. I'll be using it mostly for my PS4 to use a wired connection. Thanks

Why not just use home plugs on the existing broadband?

The new white router is a lot better than the older ones I had. Try and move the router to the middle floor too if possible if you want good wifi all over the house.

VM broadband is the best out there once it's set up properly and you have the newer equipment.

The connection will still be horrible even on the middle floor, it's not easy having good connection while trying to game while you have 3-5 people at a time on Netflix, Facebook etc. So just going to get my own modem and have no more problems. Would you recommend anything cheap enough but good internet speeds?

Also, we have the new white router, got it about 4 months ago, my mum pays over 180 a month for internet but its still pretty bad considering we've so many people on it.

How does she pay €180 a month for internet? Are you including TV and premium channels in that figure?

Have you tried home plugs? Have you moved the modem upstairs?

Run up a Cat5 up the side of the house and you will be sorted. Thats what we done. Costs less than 30 euro.

180+ a month, thats for 2 of their TV boxes too, not even the horizon ones. The old ones with no premium channels, just all standard channels, no sky movies, sports etc. And it's downstairs in the sitting room.

Also what are home plugs, never heard of them, what's their purpose? and we were told they want 80 euro for it to be moved upstairs.

I can't speak for all of the country but virgin is considered the fasted and the best in Dublin. If you get a fast good connection downstairs its up to you to route a good connection upstairs. This is the same regardless on what provider you use

Where are the TV points in your house?

Home plugs basically act like a network cable but they use the electricity cables in your house so you don't need to run any cabling

Try and find out what package you're on. Even the most expensive packs with 1 extra box should only be €100 or so.

€80 is the correct price for cabling up an extra point alright. If it saves you getting a second internet connection like I think you're considering then it's worth it (if it works!)

First thing would be get some homeplugs. Argos are good as they'll take them back no bother if they don't work.

If horizon is available then get it and get on a bundle for all services. Maybe the newer price packages don't apply if you have an older type main box. Make sure you get to keep the modem.

We have TV points in 4 of the bedrooms except my attic,
I also bought a TP-LINK about a year ago (little under a year) and it was rubbish to be honest, kept disconnecting my wifi, was only 30 euro so didn't bother to even bring it back. My mum has had the same package for years, probably over 6-8 years wouldn't know the exact time frame, We're only on like 30MB's or something, something very weak. But I keep asking her to get an upgrade and she just keeps thinking, upgrade = higher bill every month. So I think the best option is to get my own modem as I have about 80-90 spare cash every week so putting 20-30 of a modem for myself wouldn't be an issue. I've been looking on Virgin Media and they're doing a package, 360MB of internet for 40 euro a month for 4 months then 60 euro afterwards, so I think i'm going to go with this deal as It's pretty cheap to be honest and super fast!

When you say TV points, these are UPC/Virgin media points?

Get your mam to upgrade to one of the current bundles. Would suggest Hirizon Max and 360mb with an extra box.
That'll have all calls to mobiles and landlines free. Better channels, HD, better internet and way cheaper than €180

You getting separate internet for yourself is crazy. Sort out your mothers package first and save her €1000 or so a year instead of you spending an additional €600 a year just so you can get your connection sorted!

Also keep in mind you'd need to pay the €80 for the cabling if you set up a new account either way as you wouldn't be using the existing point.

    Homeplugs would be under €50

Ah! I've just talked to the mum and she basically shut it down right away, the usual 'I'll think about it' when it's saving her money. She complains every month about the bill but does nothing to fix it, just a regular call to virgin media and a good owl argument and that's all. She's mad. I've just done a connection test up in the attic, 3.7MB upload and 7.6 download speed!! Haha great speeds!! If the home plugs are like TP-LINK then it more than likely won't work. I've tried and it was a waste of money, everyone in the house complained to me cause it kept disconnecting the Internet, nobody in my house but me understands the goodness of high internet speeds, they all give out about it but don't want to get an upgrade so leave them at it, while I'll be upstairs on flying speeds.

Your problem is wireless, not virgin, not the router. Hosuehold wireless was never intended to go through two floors with multiple devices connected. Use homeplugs or run a cable.

If you have the new Compal, Virgin media branded white box, you have the 360mb package which is more then enough for multiple people.

We have the old package from years ago for like 30MB only. Haha my mum doesn't like upgrading she's old school I guess!! So even with a few home plugs or cables it'll still be really **** speeds.

You have the new white router but the old package? BS.

Grow a pair OP. Do some actual research, present it to your mother and either get on a new package, or., more likely, do something to improve the signal to your lair.

The home plugs aren't wireless, so they aren't like your tp link.
Fair enough if she doesn't want to upgrade, that's her own business I guess, but the homeplugs are your next logical step.
€180 a month is mental money to be spending. Get the bill out, see how it breaks down. Do the sums for her.
Use the address checker on the website to see what speeds are actually available at your address.

Have you offered to share the cost for the existing connection and in the process do the research to upgrade the home package, might work out cheaper overall?

I wonder if phone calls are pushing the bill way up?

We have the new router as our old black router wouldn't work and they came out and took a look and it was the router and gave us the new white one, and what do you mean grow a pair? We're talking about Internet broadband here you twat. Lol

They were before, but my mum got all mobiles disconnected from the phone so we can only call landline numbers, no mobile numbers.

We're constantly going over our monthly internet usage as the package isn't even unlimited.

You must be on a very old 30mb package with a fair usage policy. You may well be on the package they used to put excessive users (over 500gb) on which is very expensive.
Can you get hold of the bill and list out exactly what ye have and how much it is.

    180 EUR / month?

You would probably get a much better package (360mb BB at least + your TV) for ~100 for one year as a loyalty offer.

Just ring UPC and ask for their loyalty department.

Edit: As other have suggested. Powerline home plugs are they way to go. We have staff that work from home and most have moved to home plugs as the wireless just wasn't reliable or strong enough.

    Sounds like a mess.

I understand the pain of going to your aunt/mother etc. with how they could save money on their bills and getting stonewalled.
Doesn't really effect me but it is annoying knowing they get ripped off. I usually offer to sit down and make the call with them. More often than not they're just afraid they'll be talked into spending more somehow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

This is the name of the one you need:

Horizon Max, 360mb, Mobile World €95
    Multi room box €11

You can remove the mobile barring (this is costing €3-4 a month) as all Irish mobiles and mobiles in 20 or so other countries are all free, as are landlines.

The only possible cost would be for a Horizon box, but the loyalty team would give you one feee if you argue it. They will also give you 3-6 months with €47.50 off if you tell them you're leaving.

They've gotten much better with their admin and they'll send you an email outlining what the pack has, how much it costs and contract etc. There's a 14 day cooling off period so you could go back to what you had if it came down to it.

    Pack is:
    Unlimited 360Mb broadband
110 TV channels: 24 in high definition
My Prime: 1,000’s of hours of Box Sets & Movies On Demand
Unlimited calls to Irish mobiles and landlines

Write all the above down. It's shocking that she's paying this much, not telling you your business but you should consider paying the €40-60 a month you were going to use on a second connection on covering some of this bill. If you covered €40 she'd be saving €115 a month and ye'd all have better broadband, more channels with HD and could ring as many mobiles as ye want.
