Crackling noise when I turned on full beams. Now car won't start.

    Peugeot 206 (2005)

I'm driving home and turn on my full beams. There was a crackling noise from the engine bay - like something to spark. Lights did work but I turned them off immediately. As I got closer to home I tried the full beams again and the same crsckilng noise was there - again I turned off the full beams.
When I got home I tried again but there was not sound and the lights worked properly. I turned off the engine and now the car will not start at all.
At the moment the central locking works, the lights (low and full beams) work. When I try to start the car the dashboard lights as normal, the lights come on, the engine sounds like it is about to start but doesn't quite turn over to start. I left it for a while and tried again. Same things - all electrics working to full capacity - engine sounds like it is about to start - no clicking noise. But it just does not start.
Could it be the starter motor? If so, why would this have started when I turned on high beams?
Is it a spark plug issue?

If the engine is turning it's not a starter issue. Have a look and see if there's anything obviously wrong. Do all the lights on the dash go out?

I'd say it's possible the battery has collapsed, any idea how old it is? It would be unlikely that the issues were related to the started motor at all, the high beams would require maximum power from the battery so there may not have been enough power for them.
The cold weather is setting in now and any battery on the way out will fail easier.

I tried jumping it and still nothing. The lights are still coming on at full beam whenever I want but it's not starting. There isn't really a clicking sound when I try to turn it over. I might try a different battery and see if it does anything.

When I first partly turn the key all the usual warning lights appear and then go out. When I try to start the engine I can hear it "whizzing" but no warning lights come on.

Is it whizzing or is the engine actually turning over.

It's whizzing. Sounds more electrical than mechanical. Not sure you could say the engine is actually turning over.

Does you insurance have remote jump start call. Out on it. Alot of policies do check it out.

If so the mobile mechanic could advise

That's interesting, as they were only manufactured since September 1998

Don't these cars suffer from failing fuse boxes or is is just 207 that does?

    Did I miss something?

Remove both battery clamps, ensure they are clean - maybe clean the surface that touches the battery terminals with some sand paper and put them back on.

The battery clamps on the 206 are some stupid "quick release" design and they give awful trouble. There's a possibility they've come a bit off the terminals from vibrations, etc.

    They look something like this:

What your describing, whizzing noise but engine not actually turning over, sounds like the solenoid on the starter isn't engaging.
To be honest though we're all just guessing here. Get a mechanic to have a look at it.

I'd say this is the issue. Give the solenoid on the starter a crack of a hammer.

Lad, memories... me just big enough to reach the pedals and trying to start the car while my dad got in under it and smacked the starter with a hammer.
What we did for fun before Boards.ie ha?

I was surprisingly old when I realised that that actually wasn't the standard way of starting a Fordson Major. :pac:
