How much of a percentage usually do cpl or any recruiters usually take when getting you a job...or does it vary a lot?

CPL mostly acts as a middleman for companies that don't want to deal with the hassles and responsibilities of hiring people themselves, so these are mostly not jobs you could get without going through them.
In terms of commission that recruiters take from companies it varies a lot. The harder it is to recruit people because they're highly skilled, the more it tends to cost them.

    (I'm not with Cpl)

Like the poster above said, it varies from client to client. Within the tech industry the average would be 15%

If the role is a real unicorn, usually we'll put the percentage up because it'll take a lot more work to find someone.

Most agencies would work on the same kind of percentages.

I think though, a point to make is that the percentage does not come out of the candidate's wages - the percentage goes on top. The client will have whatever in the kitty to pay salaries. The usual motivation for salaries is to keep them all on the same kind of band within the company.
Even for contract roles, the rates are usually set so the fee goes on top.
