    Hi all,

I am a self employed painter. I've worked on my own for years now. But I have a lot of work coming up and a child on the way very soon, so was hoping to get an apprentice to help me out and all going well keep them on full time and train. Only thing is, I have no clue on what kind of wage they'd be expecting. I've been painting 14 years now, and when I was an apprentice the starting wage per week was £30. No joke, £30. Per week. I couldn't pay any young person that for work. What would be a fair wage?

Will this person be trained and supervised in his work or will they be expected to work alone while you attend other commitments.

If it's the later it's not an apprentice which is required, it's someone you need to take on.

If this person is going to be guided and work alongside you to learn and develop then I would be expecting a starting wage of approx 150 to 300 per week.

Hi Hammer, no this person will be trained and under supervision of myself at all times. Always working on same jobs as myself. That's a guideline in wage I was thinking! Thanks!

Think minimum wage.... The training from a pro really is a longer term benefit. smart lad will jump at it!
