LNB or box problem... that is the question

    Hi,

Just seeking some advice before I pay for someone to check out my satellite dish/LNB for issues...

I have an Amiko Alien 2 with 2 satellite feeds from a quad LNB. A few weeks ago it started freezing (with a tune failed message), sometimes for a few seconds... sometimes for a few minutes. It seems to be the case that by switching to another channel you can go back to the original channel and get it working again which makes me suspicious that this is because the polarisation on the LNB switches and triggers some resolution.

Unfortunately this is very inconsistent. Entire days may go by with no freezes. Weather seems to have no effect. When all is well SNR is 70% and AGC 60%. When there's an issue they drop to under 30/0 or 0/0. I've disabled each tuner separately and moved cables and it seems to affect both cables/tuners, but it seems like it happens less often when one cable is left disconnected.

I've tried using an old Sky box as a "control" but the issue is so infrequent (but annoying) that I can't leave it on long enough to notice a problem there.

So, does this sounds familiar to anyone? I guess I'm just concerned that if I call someone out, I won't even know if anything they do fixes it until a few days have gone by, and I have a doubt that maybe there is a box problem.

    John.

Can you get access to the dish yourself and what type of lnb do you have ?

    Hi Tony,

The dish is on the chimney of a semi-detached house unfortunately and I would not trust myself up there even if I had a ladder.

All I know of the LNB is it was installed by Sky more than 10 years ago when I first got a Sky+.

All I can do is take a picture (see attached)... but I doubt it tells anything. I was toying with the idea of upgrading from the Amiko to an Edison os mini, so I might even do that first.

    Ix.

Thanks for the pic. The dish actually looks quite corroded so might also consider taking the opportunity to replace that first with a new lnb and see if it cures the problem .

Really agree with Tony as the type of LNB you have are always causing me trouble and always replace when I come across them, bad design from day one, the support bracket cracks in the middle and as you can see from your own photo the door covering the lnb connections falls off and has to be attached by tape just to ensure waterproofing....but to be honest if your going to change the lnb on that dish Id consider changing the lot.
