Samsung TV 1yr 7months old. Had the pictured fault on switching on a few days back. I need some informed opinions or advice about repairing or dumping!
Rest of the screen and picture is perfect apart from the section shown.
    Thanks for any knowledgeable replies.

    Any damage?

If not, back to the shop it goes.

Why would you dump a 1yr 7 month telly?

No damage at all but it is out of warranty. If it is the screen that is faulty it would not be cost effective to repair. Thanks for your in-put but I am looking for replies from the technically aware as to what the fault might be. I live ninety kilometres from the nearest repair shop, so I am trying to figure out if it is worth the journey!

A product like that has an expected life of longer than 1 year and 7 months, warranty or not. Bring it back to the shop.

As above, a warranty is selling tool and is next to meaningless in Ireland. An item is expected to last a "reasonable" amount of time. 1 year 7 months is not a reasonable length of time. TBH if I got less than 4-5 years out of a branded telly I'd be complaining.

Back to the shop with you.

Thanks for replies, Samsung have been notified but are being a little reticent to talk about it. I agree with you guys that one would reasonably expect a better lifetime from such a product. As it is, the TV is only used about four hours in the evenings, when contacted Samsung said they Guarantee there are no known issues with my model! Well guys you have one now.
Hopefully if I keep plugging away at them they might do something.

Mention EU Directive 99/44/EC relating to the sale of goods and Samsung will fix it without issue.

    http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=URISERV:l32022&from=EN

The TV has to work for a reasonable amount of time which is certainly more than 2 years.
Of course you are not covered if you dropped it or the fault was caused by moisture damage.

    Bought directly from Samsung?

I think there is something about the seller is obliged to provide the repair and deal with the manufacturer.
After that you need to go direct to the manufacturer yourself for the repair.

    I am not sure though

The mythic 6 year European warranty was never excepted into Irish retail law / standards so dont look for it.
Warranty period in Ireland is 1 year unless specified by the manufacturer/retailer. Manufacturers who offer 2 years may require a direct contact with the consumer rather than the store of purchase however if the manufacturer won't play ball contact the store.

And yes most definitely that's a fault and I would be straight back to supplier / manufacturer looking for a repair.

It's the mythic 2 year euro warranty that Ireland doesn't adopt. The 6 year thing comes from some ambiguity with the Irish sale of goods act. Truth is there is no fixed length time period. In my first post here I typed reasonable in " " as it's very much relative to the quality/price/usage etc of the product.

I ask if bought from Samsung directly as you exercise your consumer rights with the retailer and not the supplier, OP. The supplier can hide behind their warranty and tell you to pfo. The retailer must resolve the issue for you in accordance with the sale of goods act. If they don't, you begin small claims court proceedings.

No drops and no moisture. The TV is never moved and looks as new as the day it was installed.

The Teal: No not bought direct from Samsung. Bought from On-Line retailer. Just registered it with Samsung for warranty purposes. That is why I have been trying to get Samsung to get involved. The Retailer I assumed has no further involvement as they don't provide the warranty. Samsung have just asked me to provide full details of when and where the TV was purchased, it's serial number etc. I already provided that info, but they now want to see an official store receipt. perhaps they are considering some form of positive action.
Hopefully I will have some sort of sensible solution from Samsung. I have no previous experience of dealing with Samsung but initially their response was fairly negative. Thanks for your input.

Dubrov thank you for the link and I shall certainly quote the details to Samsung.

Bit late with this update but briefly took seller to small claims court and was fully refunded the price of the TV and was also paid 50 euro as a good will gesture on top. So thanks everyone for your advice and links to Consumer rights etc. Much appreciated as I was just going to dump the failed TV as I did not know there were extended legal rights above an advertised warranty.
The seller also apologised through the small claims court for not providing immediate assistance to my complaints.
I since purchased a new TV so very pleased with the outcome.
