VW Golf MK5 iPod sound switching sides

This will only happen with iPod playback. The iPod playback will play fine on both speakers intermittently and then switch mainly to the LHS speaker. All settings are set to give equal weighting to both sides.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

How is the iPod connected to the audio system? I've seen this happen before with damaged cables, or even dirt/dust/fluff/etc in the iPod port itself.

The iPod is connected via the built in iPod dock in the centre armrest.

Its gotta be a dodgy solder joint at the docking station.
can you wiggle the ipod and see does it affect it.
