Chimney problems

I've read some older posts regarding chimney downdraft problems but just wondering what the current thinking is?
I had a Boru stove fitted last year with a twin wall flue, but terrified of lighting it due to downdraft. The installer has raised the flue height but it's made little or no difference. I can only light the stove on totally calm days, otherwise my house will be filled with smoke. Would a cowl help???

Are you sure its downdraft and not just a total lack of air due to a sealed up house?

Does the carbon monoxide alarm go off ?

Presuming you have one, if not, get one.

Thanks all. Pretty sure the room has plenty ventilation... it's a sun room extension, & even if the door is open to the outside the smoke billows out. The carbon monoxide alarm doesn't go off

How far above the ridge of the house does the chimney go? Its hard to get a stove chimney wrong but if the top is in just the wrong spot below the ridge then air coming over the top of the roof will get forced down it.

The chimney is just below the ridge of the roof. The installer couldn't go any higher as he felt it wouldn't be stable

There's what used to be know as the 10 3 2 rule, your chimney needs to be at least 3 ft about any roof (flat or sloping) and then 2 ft above anything within a 10 ft radius.

So if any part of the main house roof is horizontally within 10 ft from the top of the chimney its likely to have problems.

Seems like problems are to be expected so....Would a H cowl be of any use do you think or should I just have the stove taken out altogether?

Should you not be bringing the installer back to fit it to a proper standard ?

Sounds like you have put the stove where you want it and then come straight up through the roof and don't have anywhere to secure the chimney and if you take it up to the required height the chimney will be unstable?

If so I would think about moving the stove to the back wall or near enough so with a straight up section and a 45 degree angle you can get chimney to the wall and then up through the sun room roof securing the chimney to the wall. Up the top at the gutter you can go up probably another 5ft beyond the last securing point which may give you suitable clearance?
