How has someone failed at being a human being so much, that they would do this?

Cat killed after firework strapped to its mouth in Tipperary http://jrnl.ie/3058322

These people should be caught, convicted and committed to a psychiatric hospital because they are clearly suffering from some mental disorder.

Are you referring to those who read and comment on 'The Journal'?

If I step on a dog I spend 10 minutes apologising, how anyone could do that to a pet is beyond me.
If they’d do this to an animal, the worry is what they’ll do to a person.

And that is as much an issue.

Its been well documented, that those who commit torture/abuse to animals, are more likely to commit assualt/murder a person.

    Absolutely sickening!

Read that they threw dogs on the fire also. Seriously, what goes through the human mind that tells you its okay, to grab a living breathing animal and burn it for fun, just to hear it scream in pain and slowly die in agony. What f*cked up mentality do these people have, where they have grown up in some sort of culture where this is acceptable.

Utterly sickening. Whoever did this holds no value for any life be it animal or human. It's a proven fact that people who abuse animals go on to abuse and even kill people.

This bull**** goes on every Halloween. Most people I know keep their pets inside that night (NOT that I am blaming the owners, because who really effing thinks that their neighbours would be so horrendous?) - also the fireworks can alarm them. But it is truly scary that there are people who would do something like that for a laugh. There's no benefit to it, no gain*, nothing but mindless casual cruelty for the sake of it. It's sick.

*Not that it would excuse it if there -was-, but when a human murders another human, there is usually at least a reason. May not be a GOOD reason, but you can follow their internal logic even while condemning them. Here, it's just...nope, got nothing.

The cat was knocked down by a car, not killed by a firework, this has been confirmed by the cat's owners.

*hackles settle a bit* Well, that's something at least. I'm not sure who the hell blows up a dead cat either, but it's better than a live one.

Hope they caught something nasty from the corpse.

People who do this should be caught and have every bone in their body beaten to dust with a lead pipe. ****ing scum.

Simply Google any of the following:

    Tallichet and Hensley
    Wright and Hensley (2003)
    McClellan (2003)
As a counter argument to the above and in the interest if fairness, also read Macdonald triad

Care to counter argue with your basis of your source?

The reason animal abuse is prevalent in Ireland is because criminal justice is non existent in Ireland. Simple as that. Unless you're an organised gang leader, you won't see the inside of a prison cell in Ireland even if you have previous convictions in the double digits. It's pathetic. Of course these assholes believe that they can do whatever they want - for all intents and purposes, it's true.

Reopen spike island for these scumbags. One way trip, Fcuk them off the boat with a guide to grow vegetables, a bag of seeds each and good luck to them. They can fend for themselves when they get there at minimal cost to the taxpayer.

it might make for an interesting reality show. 'survivor - scumbag edition'. Every year, the public can vote one back to society, if they prove remorseful and productive.

This doesn't just apply to alleged animal abusers, but could cover an array of scumbag-related crimes.

That Clonmel story is a hoax. Unsurprisingly the Journal went ahead and copied and pasted it from somewhere without checking. They've since deleted it.

As far as I know, there were no fireworks involved at all, an assumption was made. The injuries to the cat weren't consistent with a firework, unfortunately people have done things like that before, and the damage is very different.

I think calling it a hoax is a bit strong, the owners genuinely thought that is what had happened. The Journal and other outlets/people should definitely have checked the facts before circulating it though.

spike island will not be reopened. ever. move on. it was closed because it wasn't economic to run.

Why would this be a source of contention?

Because it's a line that is trotted out every time there is a cruelty story yet I've yet to see imperial proof of such a statement being true.

Hell, I'm proof that the statement is just a myth.

True and highly relevant. We have to arrive at a point where we face the fact that we have a lot of data points that can predict those likely to end up as a threat to the rest of us.

Some people lack empathy and it makes them dangerous.

A normal person would think 'if I was a cat...' and wouldn't dream of doing such a cruel act.

People who lack empathy and go further and do cruel acts should be locked up in either jail or a mental health facility, I believe they are very dangerous.

I think it is more true that say that if the behaviour follows a pattern, ie if a child is repeatedly cruel/tortures animals its a definite warning sign. A once off incident may not be indicative of anything apart from someone being a dick.

This story like a lot of online witch hunts has turned out to be false.

You're an anecdote not a statistic. Why is it surprising that torturers of animals wouldn't also be violent elsewhere.

More Chinese whispers being fed by Facebook. The cat was found dead, a neighbour decided those no-good kids from the council estate must've killed it with a banger and the rumour mill went into overdrive. Some dogs were even thrown onto the bonfire for good measure. None of it happened of course, the cat was seen being knocked down on CCTV and the owner has deleted her posts. I'm glad it was proven to be a rumour before some vigilante hero decided to mete "justice" on an unsuspecting teenager...
