Another how much do you tip your hairdresser question

Regular lurker on here. I'm going to start by apologising in advance as I know there are quite a few threads on this already, but I was hoping to get some up-to-date feedback and advice.

These are the threads I found and the feedback is quite mixed:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=90913811

I'm very paranoid about tipping, purely because of one instance - I'd been going to a regular lady to get my eyebrows done - she was brilliant. So at Christmas I tried to give her €10 but she point blank refused to take it and just said she couldn't. Still to this day, I wonder whether I insulted her because it was too much/too little - I have no idea.

I've been going to a regular hairdresser for years and never tipped, but instead gave everyone a €20 each Christmas. However I did see other people tipping so I was always a bit :o.

Anyway, now I'm changing hairdresser and I want to get this right from the start. I'm getting highlights and a cut so my first session is probably going to be well over €120, but it might come down a bit after that as I'm hoping I'll be going back regularly.

If the same person does my colour and cut (and I'm happy) would it be acceptable to give €5? Or is that too little considering how much I'm spending ?

Also, opinion seems to be mixed on whether to tip junior staff if they do the wash/blow-dry. Would €2 be an insult or is it really considered ok not to tip them?

I don't tip my hairdresser. Why on god's earth would I? I pay the price advertised at the door and I expect to get my money's worth. My regular cut is in excess of €80, which I'm happy to pay, but I don't see the need to hand out more.

If I have change on me then I'll tip, but I don't lose any sleep if I don't. I go to the same place all the time, come home from Dublin specifically to go there, and hairdressers charge plenty as it is

Had this conversation with my friend the other day. I don't tip mine - I go every week so it would cost me a fortune - and sometimes I have 2 girls doing my hair (colour) ! At Christmas I bring in a box of biscuits or sweets and I give the girl who washes the hair some cash.

I go to the same hairdresser all the time and like Gunslinger, if I have change on me I'll tip 2, 3 or 4euro depending what I have, if not I don't lose sleep over it.. as another poster said, they get enough money from us :)

I don't tip every time but I do tend to tip the cost of a cut (€40) direct to my hairdresser at Christmas. I don't go that often during the year and it saves me worrying about having cash on me each time. I was told by her at the start of this year that she appreciated it because it was an unexpected bonus at Christmas.

That said I only tipped her because she was my regular hairdresser. Before when I was just going to whoever was free in a different (more expensive) salon, I didn't tip.

I dont tip my hair dresser ever. I honestly don't get why I should? I'm already paying through the nose for a service they are offering (and obviously I'm happy to pay it). Same goes for taxi drivers, beauty salons etc. I drop in and around €100 every 5-6 weeks, its expensive enough as it is. They get paid for what they do and while im sure its nice to get a few tips here and there, sorry but not from me :-)

Tipping isn't nessessary or expected. I tend to tip my regular people because I'm awful for last minute booking, and I find the better you tip the more accommodating they are. For example, my eyebrow girl finishes at 6:30 but sometimes I need a later appointment and she will never let me down.

i find that some places set their prices so that you do end up tipping....my hairdressers charges 38euro for a wash cut and blowdry so i hand over 40euro and generally say to keep the change....

I round the amount up for 5-10 euro. It also depends if I am getting color, highlights and cut or just a blow dry. I take kids to the same hairdresser and tend to tip for them. Their haircuts are dirt cheap but it never takes less than 20 minutes or half an hour per one. From knowing the costs attached to hourly rate I would actually feel guilty not paying more.

Thanks everyone really appreciate it. I am now leaning towards the option of not tipping - it's probably safer for now, because once I start it will be harder to stop. I tend to put it on my card so I can't even say keep the change!

Good to know I'm not the only one that does a Christmas tip instead - if I keep going regularly to the new place I might do that again instead.

I don't tip. As mentioned above, I pay a fairly hefty price to get my colour and cut done in the first place without adding on more money to my bill. It's unnecessary.

I tip a fiver usually but that's because I don't go often (maybe 2-3 times a year) and the girl who does my hair is absolutely fantastic, I've never found anyone like her who just gets it just right every single time.

    I'm a gent, €15 haircut every 3 weeks. I always give €20.
I used to shave my head for about 10 years up until last Christmas so I think I'm just really happy with having some hair / hair style again :pac:

My hair costs me at least €150 each go and because of the vibrant colours that I tend to get done, I have to go fairly regularly, and as such I don't tip the hairdresser.

I believe you're paying enough as it is andI would never be offering up a tip. Sorry if it sounds blunt.

My cut costs €45 so I always give €50 so a €5 tip. I go every 6-8 weeks and as others have said I love the job she does so am more than happy to tip :)

Ive been so confused about this too! So I'm tipping €5 for cuts but nothing for a blow dry as I already find them overpriced. I like to get one a week and if I have to tip too I jut can't afford to keep getting them

Don't feel like you have to tip. You don't. It's appreciated but it's not expected.

I always tip about a 5er. Just because I'm paying 80+ to get my hair done doesn't mean it's going directly into the persons pocket.

It took me 25 years of going to hairdressers to find my perfect one so I appreciate that and tip accordingly. I go every 8 weeks and tip a tenner every time. I spent so many years going to hairdresser's who, despite you being a regular in the salon treat you like they ve never seen you before, break appointments when a 'more important ' client appeared and suddenly you ve the junior. So I moved salons and more of the same. Until I found my current one and I love my two monthly visit. No awkward small talk or having to explain anything. Good customer service is worth the appreciation.

It's not outrageous tipping for hairdresser as it's not outrageous not tipping. I prefer non American attitude towards tipping when you do it only if you want. I tip the hairdresser, in the restaurants, my mechanic and some other services if I am happy with what was done. I will less likely tip solo traders with no employees.

I would be the same. I only go maybe 3/4 times a year. A bit more this year as I had 2 weddings. But because I leave it so long between cuttings and colour, my hairdresser has to cut and restyle as opposed to just trimming. I'm also a divil for ringing last minute cos I only just realise how bad my hair has been and how long since I've been and she is always great for fitting me in.

you dont have to tip its polite to tip after all the time they are spending on your hair i think3 to 5 euro is more than enough i remember i got tipped 20 euro just for washing hair i was chuffed!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,646 ✭✭✭✭qo2cj1dsne8y4k

Plenty of people that don't tip are polite too. A customer that's coming to your salon and choosing your work is a) keeping you in a job and b) likes your work. That's appreciation enough for most of us. I would rather a friendly client who tells her friends about my work, and who has enough respect to be on time for her appointment rather than someone rude difficult and obnoxious who thinks leaving me 3 extra euro at the end means I should be grateful.
