Buying and moving a car (no tax & no NCT)

    Hi all,

I am looking at buying a car in longford for my sister. It has no tax and no NCT for the last 3 years.
I have comprehensive car insurance so if she buys the car I would be covered to drive it 3rd party. Is there anyway I can get the car home (legally) for her without having to pay for a tow truck on top of the price of the car?
If the car was purchased and after receiving change of ownership the car was declared off the road, can it then be driven home to an arranged nct appointment on my 3rd party extension? In other words I would be driving the car with no NCT or no tax but insured? I have a Q&A from the housing, planning, community and local government website that I think answers this but just would like some opinions please.

"Q15. What if I'm due to have an NCT while my car is off the road?
A15. A vehicle may be used during the period of a non-use declaration in two cases:
to bring it to and from a test centre for the test; or
to bring it for repair after a re-test, or back to where you are keeping it while it is off the road after the repairs. This option may only be used where an appointment has already been made for a re-test."

    Any advice appreciated! Cheers

Check your policy and see if the car has to have a valid nct for you to be insured on it under 3rd party extension, some policies include it, some don't. The last thing you want is to be stopped or have an accident with no tax, nct and insurance.

If it's off the road for 3 years the tyres will be perished and it's in no condition to go on the road.

If it has been sitting for 3 years then trailer it to be sure. You will need to change coolant, oil, tyres and even fuel for it to start and run properly the first time.

    Thanks for that!
Ive read through FBD car insurance policy documents booklet and cannot find any mention of an nct in it for 3rd party extension.
Car is a year 2000 with 25k miles, that has the 4 original tyres on it so I would need to change them alright for nct didnt think of that, thanks!
Car is running so was hoping to get it home before changing oil, coolant etc.
    Need to reconsider my options!
    Cheers

A car sitting up that long is not a good thing. Why not get one that's already tested?

    Low mileage isn't everything

Have you actually seen and inspected the car? No point in looking to put options in place if it turns out to be a scraper, most likely if it's sitting there that long the interior is also destroyed with mould and damp.

Have you checked you can actually get this insured? A lot of companies refusing cars over 15 years.

We'd a car layed up for years. Sold it to a friend and all we did was throw in fresh petrol and battery. Once we remembered the kill switch it started fine and they drove it off. He kept it for years after with no problems.

Once it isn't going far, ours went less than a km, then spending any money on it before it starts is a potential waste of money, especially since every new car starts with no oil in the system.

Their policy will only cover the driving of road legal cars, under the 3rd party liability.
This is must be NCT'd the same terms apply to the insured car you own. No nct is null insurance cover on the extension perk
