Anybody know the deal with getting scrappage for a car that needs a bit of work ( about 500 euro worth), not drivable at the moment as the brakes dont work, all else is ok though (engine, ect..) . Car has a valid NCT & Tax.

Some will take it in without running car, depends on the dealer.

ask several dealers, they want to sell cars and scrappage isn't an official scheme, more a sales ploy.

It'll cost them money to dispose of a non running car and since the "scrappage" deal is just a marketing gimic they should be able to offer without a car to "scrap".

Lok at the terms and conditions of the scrappage scheme and talk to the dealers involved. I reckon they will take it as it has an nct and tax.

A few years backa neighbours car was stolen and found burnt out,
The insurance paid out on the car.
He asked to keep the shell of the car. He then used the burnt out shell for the scrappage scheme, He satisfied all the criteria for the scrappage deal, owned the car for 6 months, had a valid nct , was taxed

Wait... am I misunderstanding something? If a car is traded in to be "scrapped," why does it matter if it's not running?

Because it's not actually scrapped, it's sold off to mates in the trade for a few euros to offset some of the discounting going on at the front end of the deal.

It's a marketing term nothing more.

Wife' 00-fiesta needed over €1k of work to pass the NCT and was accepted under scrappage deal with Hyundai

Now I know that €1k is retail price but still needed a good bit of work for a car which wasn't worth a lot even with NCT

So can they really call it scrappage, when there's no scrapping? I'd of assumed the destruction of the vehicle being traded in.

They can do what they like because as has been said several times it is nothing more than a marketing ploy to get punters thinking they are getting a better deal.

It's the same as offering €5k trade-in on a car worth €3k on full asking price where they would probably discount €2.5k for a cash sale.

Doesn't matter whether or not its a marketing ploy. I understand the whole premise is a trade in as mentioned in my post earlier, but to call it "scrappage," I'd expect destruction of the vehicle after trading in.

Because it worked well for them in the past and most believe what they see written on the sign.l

There was an official scheme during the boom where VRT was reduced when a car was scrapped against a new purchase. It was supposedly to get life expired cars off the roads but seeing as it only applied to those buying new who more often than not were trading in cars that were still mechanically sound it was little more than a subsidy for the SIMI boyos.

All these current dealer offers are just trading off that still being in the consciousness of many buyers.

What difference does it make to you if the car you have traded in gets scrapped or put back on the road anyway?

None, but for the topic of the thread with someone who owns a non-running car potentially being difficult to submit it for a scrappage promotion. It seems a bit bewildering really.

The original Government scrappage scheme that was brought in to try and give the car sales market a boost had a number of requirements in terms of being insured, NCTed, etc. They basically meant the vehicle had to be in a driveable/roadworthy condition in order to qualify for the government rebate.

In effect, to stop people taking the yoke that's been rusting in a field for 20 years and using it to claim a discount on a new car.

Dealers have tended to stick with this because they have no interest in giving a discount for a piece of scrap; they'd rather something they could sell on in the trade.

The scrappage scheme was brought in on the lead up to NCT launching in 2000. NCT couldn't be a requirement.

There was a scrappage scheme in 2010.

    How did I know that?

Because the fuel pump on these cars is a flipping nightmare, the engine is a bit agricultural as you know, but it has good torque. It's totally let down by that bag of poo! A failed pump in effect writes off the engine.

It pains me to say that as I like the saab make, but Saab should have stayed away from the diesel engines that were from other makers.

    Oh,it's GMs fault Aswell !.............
