Secondary school not to open after mid term

So I received a letter from my daughters school today to state they won't be opening after the mid term break due to members of Asti withdrawing supervision and substitution services.

She is sitting leaving cert next June.

    Who can I complain to?

The ASTI since they are the ones forcing the schools to close.

Your local TDs and the Government. Teachers are happy and willing to teach your daughter and will be at the school gates on Monday the 7th prepared to teach, at the normal school opening time. If the school is closed it is not the teachers choice. Teachers are being locked out of the schools as well as students.

As a student I think the days off are a savoir to me for catching up on project work that I simply can't get done during school or in the couple of hours when I come home

I agree entirely. I've been finding the religion project very hard, and I need to check with my teacher if you can use a certain scientist's website full of his own works as a source. If I mess up this draft I'll feel horrible! :(

Dept. of Education and Local govt TD.

This has been flagged and voted upon before the Summer. The govt. knew teachers would be withdrawing S&S... but only decided to advertise for subs in the last few weeks.

3 years ago The dept. agreed to pay teachers for S&S if they did it for free up until June... 3 years have passed We did it for free in September and October, a deal is a deal.

I totally empathise, it's not ideal as I also have a shedload of work to catch up on when (if!) this is resolved. Most teachers want their students to be prepaired as much as possible for their exams.

I really hope the schools close for at least another week or so.

I'm really feeling the LC pressure at the moment and feel I can get a lot more done at home than at school. Most of my of my classmates feel the same.

Me too. I didn't get everything studied over the midterm despite killing myself trying to. I still have 2 or 3 chapters left to revise in Business/Home Ec and I'm hoping to study Irish more extensively and do some more English notes as well. I just keep running out of time in supervised study. I also have LCVP work to do. Oh my god!!!

Still have no idea if we'll be closed or not, but I'm crossing my fingers that we'll be closed at least for Monday and Tuesday like everyone's speculating. I didn't get much done at all over the midterm due to other things getting in the way (and now still have to face a full comparative essay among Biology and French papers...) so I really could do with another day or two off to calm myself down a little and actually buckle down. All my classmates have been expressing similar views today, we just want to get our heads stuck in to doing more productive study ourselves.

It seems to be now a definite that schools will be closed this week. My mum has just arranged with a teacher to come here every morning to do Irish and French and help me prepare my orals, essays, etc.

    Happy days!!

This issue is still not resolved, hence why I am reviving this thread.

The ASTI agreed to talk with the department of education regarding fair pay for younger teachers.

There has been NO RESOLUTION as of yet, and they were still in the midst of talks. As far as we can see, if there is no resolution to this, the ASTI will be considering to take the exact same approach of shutting down schools after the Christmas break, which means chaos for schools which have mocks after the christmas breaks. I think the issue will be resolved before that happens, but that's what I thought about the midterm 1 month ago, so who knows. The government have to deal with the Gardaí, Teachers and Nurses all going on strike, so they will delay this issue with the teachers for as long as possible.

Please don't blame the teachers themselves, they are only in the union, and the union is calling the shots, but even still, it's the department of education's fault.

They promised to pay teachers for supervision in 2016, a couple of years ago. Those payments have never been made, and that's not fair on your local school, complaining won't solve anything, sorry to say.

    Great!

I really hope the teachers go on strike again in January or, better still, before the orals.

The grind teacher my mum organised is brilliant. However, she is only available for grinds on days she is on strike as she has primary school kids.
