Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Motorbike Helmets - ECE 22.05 and DOT

    Hi everyone,

I am new to the motorbike world and am having a hard time finding the right helmet. I've found the UK testing website, SHARP, which is great for finding out which helmet is going to save my noggin should I get in a crash.

One thing I can't find out anywhere is whether or not my insurance here will be void if I use a helmet that is not ECE 22.05 approved, but is DOT approved.

Basically, I've found one that I would like to get but they are only DOT approved and they a re not planning on getting them tested for ECE 22.05 anytime soon. Is it case that my insurance would be void should anything happen, or that it is the riders choice?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!

IIRC the helmet has to confirm to EU standards to be legal for road use here. If a crash results in head trauma then you will be held partially responsible and any payout will be reduced accordingly. Must be a very specialised helmet if they are willing to ignore 500m potential customers.

Not a riders choice, but rather a legal requirement that it's ECE certified. DOT standards seem to be slightly lower than our ECE standards.

    You're doing it all wrong.

First you need to make sure you're getting a ECE 22.05 lid.

Second, everyone has go a different shaped head. Go down to a shop/show whatever where they have lots of actual lids, not pictures of them. Then keep trying them on until you find one that fits correctly.

Third, out of the one that fit correctly, choose one you like.

The absolute best helmet for you is the one that fits you perfectly. If it's a tiny bit too big your head will bounce around and too small will be uncomfortable and distracted. Go for the above, find ones that fit perfect and then buy the best of these.
