An aerial in the attic may work, depends on the roof structure, orientation etc. Best outside on the roof though. The type depends on your location etc, but a correct group one for your transmitter is important. You feed it to the sitting room with coax cable such as WF100.

Was the existing aerial cable ever attached to an aerial, if not it may be lying somewhere in the attic under insulation or stuff we all store there. No easy way to find it other than searching. Can you trace the satellite cable, they may've been installed at the same time?

Find your recommended transmitter here - https://www.saorview.ie/en/get/coverage, which will determine which group aerial is required

As posted previously how well an attic mounted aerial will work will basically depend on how good the signal is in there, an outdoor aerial is recommended.

OK, the problem with the internal cabling for ntl/UPC/VM it could be running to a junction box somewhere on the exterior of the house or to the fascia where it connects to the cable network and may not go to the attic at all. If you can find this point it might be possible to run a cable from it to an external aerial.

An aerial installer would probably run a new cable thru the wall similar to the satellite cabling from an external aerial if you cannot find any of the existing cable in the attic.

Assuming you're in Dublin Saorview will be from Three Rock or Kippure, a white tip or red tip aerial will be required depending on transmitter, see my previous links.
