Motor tax refund - rates?

Does anyone have any experience, at what rate is motortax refunded?
And is it refunded in whole 3 months periods, or is it monthly?

All I know, if you apply for refund (assuming you have valid reason which entitles you to do so), you can get a refund. Condition is that car must have at least 3 full months tax left at the moment of application.

So f.e. if my car has 5 full months tax left, will I get refund of full 5 months, and at what rate?

It starts from the start of the calendar month after you apply.

I would expect that the rate would be the 1/12th of the cheaper annual rate, but that's just a guess.

    OK, that's clear.
But now - If I pay tax tomorrow for 6 month (€394 - 2.0 engine), and apply for refund by the end of November, that means I'll be due refund for December, January, February, March, April - 5 month.
How much cash will I receive from them?

Refund is at start of each month and is refunded to the nearest 3 months period.

    e.g.
You tax car 1st of jan to 31st dec and it breaks down/is written off 2nd jan you get refunded 9 months tax, it breaks down 2nd april you get 6 months tax back etc etc

Based only on my guess on how should work, you'd get €295.83 back (5/12 of €710)

I never heard of it being broken into quarters as suggested above. I know there's a minimum of 3 months alright.
That said, my knowledge on it is sketchy at best!

You must have a full 3 months unused tax minimum and it's only refundable if the car is being destroyed or has been stolen and not recovered.

    That doesn't look good then.
You wound't know what rate they use... Is it just 1/4 of annual rate for each 3 months?

It's whatever 3 months tax would cost you as far as i know. But knowing how greedy revenue is it's probably a % of the annual rate to the nearest 3 months

Can't see them giving out extra money

So most likely there will be refund based on percentage of annual rate, so f.e. for 3 motnhs it will be 3/12 (1/4) of annual rate.

What I'm still not sure though, is if I can get a refund only for 3, 6, or 9 months like Supergurrier is suggestin, or is it per month basis, like in my example of refund for 5 months?

Once you have 3 months left just follow the steps in the link SG posted.

Does that mean we are loosing you as well ?

See, the thing is I just need to use vehicle for a week or two, and then drive it abroad.

Spending €200 on 3 months tax seems excessive to me.
So I though, the alternative could be to tax it for 6 months, and then apply for refund of 5 months. I could come better off financially with doing that...

But it's only assuming I can get a refund for full 5 months, not like Supergurries suggests only 3 months.

It's best to get 6 months and claim for 5.

Call the refunds section in the MTO in Smithfield and the people who process them can advise you.
Call 2228000 and ask for refunds.

Just gone through this process, was 3months remaining on disc when I handed paperwork in, but car was destroyed in august, so I got the extra month back.

1/12th of the yearly rate for each month remaining at time of destruction....

Process took just over 5 weeks
