Just out testing the fields with my cheap tester.
Just wondering what do people use and what you think of them or do you get the test off the soil samples.
Also interested if anyone uses a digital one.

Neighbour has an oldish ph meter from a lime contractor back in the day.

    Have a 'penetrometer' for compaction.
    Soil temp gauge.

    A spade.

What do you mean? The spade is his ph meter?:D

How does it work, just a probe stuck into the ground?
Have a cheap €10 digital one, been meaning to calibrate it and test against something else

I think this was the same a few Euro.
It was bought in a garden centre.
No batteries just the difference in the metals in the two probes.
You're supposed to dig the ground with a trowel and then pour in distilled water and put the probes in and wait 10 minutes for the needle to settle.
But in this weather the ground is damp enough to just stick it in.
You really would need to get the soil tested in a lab to see if they're the same reading.
But it's handy just to let you know which are the worst fields and roughly how much lime you need.

Looks like a handy little yoke. Wouldn't mind getting myself one of them

Was messing about with this today, it seems accurate to under .1 units so should be as accurate as any lab test when allowing for a bit of sampling error.
