"improving bike routes/parking increases train ridership and potential job accessibility for train users"

Across the Netherlands around 40% of train users arrive or depart by bicycle.

I was always impressed at the scale of the bike parking at railways stations in the Netherlands: all under cover and with an attendant on duty, handing out parking receipts. That would seem to be a great way to encourage rail use.

It's definitely a no brainer to at least have the Coke bikes, or whoever sponsors them now, at each tram and train station around the capital. Not to mention in the other cities.
It's a shame though that when you sign up in one city for the year you can't transfer and use it in other cities around the country too without paying an extra fee, whatever about cross border use.

what is the rate of bicycle theft like in Holland compared to Dublin?

I'd imagine a lot of people in Dublin wouldn't feel as comfortable leaving their bike locked up miles away from their workplace.

I think initially, although the facilities were manned, there were quite a few thefts, but they have responded by increasing monitor, CCTV and police. Seems to be the way they do things over there: if something isn't working, they make changes to fix it.

    Wikipedia
Bicycle theft in Amsterdam is widespread: in 2005, about 54,000 bicycles were stolen and every year between 12,000 and 15,000 bicycles are retrieved from the canals.

    Dutch Amsterdam
Bike theft is a fact of life in Amsterdam. Amsterdam Police and the Cyclists’ Union estimate that each year between 50.000 and 80.000 bikes are stolen. Mind you: 58 percent of bicycles are stolen from in front of someone’s own house, and most bikes thefts take place during the daytime.
