Motor Vehicles shown to kill five times as many people as illegal drugs

Comments

These two things are not quite independent, as many of the drivers of those killed by motor vehicles are on drugs.
And there has been a war on motor vehicles, with the fatality rate having been hugely reduced in advanced countries, the problem is that others have not done this.

Because If you compare the trip to trip ratio...

    Actually, screw it.

I'm all for decriminalising drugs, but your premise is ridiculous.

It's a temporary issue until self driving cars are more common

Motor vehicles have sustained campaigns to make vehicles safer, but no country has ever tried to make them illegal.

My point is that there is not 'harm reduction' in drugs policy but there is when it comes to the use of motor vehicles.

    Because that would be retarded.

    Does it really?

I don't accept the argument that we 'need' motor vehicles. We managed without them quite well until about 100 years ago.

In order to make a valid comparison between the two activities you would have to establish an appropriate measure to compare them on. Total deaths is no good if 100 times more people do one activity than the other.

Wrong again. The harm reduction thing you refer to is called a prescription. Only a qualified doctor can permit a chemist to give you drugs. This is to ensure you don;t take too many, don't mix them with drugs that would have negative effects and don't have a bad reaction to them. What you refer to as illicit drugs are simply forms of drugs that aren't considered to be more beneficial than not.

Kids, say NO to motor vehicles.

I don't drive. Don't take non prescription drugs. Now I'm confused

Drugs ruin the lives of countless people and their families without killing them.
Same can't be said for cars.

But at the same time drugs in moderation are great.

We need cars we don't need illegal drugs, stupid argument

And managing is different to managing well. We moved around extremely slowly and had to pay huge amounts of trains or horses. We are lucky to be able to travel all over ireland and visit family from all corners of the country in relatively short periods of times. We managed without mobile phones too but it would be difficult to make a strong argument that we are better off without them, same as with cars

People where killed on the roads before motorised transport became common.

I'll just walk to work in Dublin everyday, OP. It takes me about 2 hours by car so walking I should be there Tuesday, if I walk now.

I'm just after renewing my car insurance. You can't tell me there's no "war on motor vehicles."

And more people die in nursing homes and hospitals. Do you know how dangerous those places are?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 990 ✭✭✭Ted111

Did you know that in the last seventeen years more people between the ages
of eleven and a half and forty nine have died on the planet earth than have died from heroin overdose in the same period. Or in a different period also.

    ..stark.

    You assume wrong.

I actually can't see why something that kills more than a million people every year is allowed when something that kills fewer people is not. That's all.

It is because cars were allowed that made it uneconomic for you to have good public transport so you would not need to use a car

Yes, but deaths rose significantly since cars were around.

The buses would be a lot more efficient if there were no cars on the road

Yes, but they died from a multitude of reasons

Would your argument not be better comparing the deaths due to legal drugs and illegal ones? More people die annually from legal drugs.

Everyone will die eventually so we should just ban living, then move one will ever die.

Cars do not make the economy viable.

Cars pollute, cause road congestion, and cause a deterioration in public transport among other things

I have a licence for all road vehicles but I do not own a vehicle myself. I cannot say that I am any less happy or feel restricted from only using public transport for my own travel needs.

If you push cars underground then they'll get into the
control of criminal gangs. They'll mixed with god knows what. Rat poison
instead of an alternator. Talcum powder for shock absorbers.

At the moment we can control it. The government can tax it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43,311 ✭✭✭✭K-9

I don't think you understands how statistics work.

Exactly, you'd need to see how many car journeys are undertaken every day vs. joints smoked etc. and even then adjustments would need to be made.

Best argument I have seen on this, I totally agree with you Ted.

So let's keep the cars and allow the drugs so long as they can be taxed.

I'd be happy with that outcome. That way everyone gets what they want. Same number of road deaths but hey, less money spent on jails and police and more money for hospitals and drug rehab.

Certain drugs were legal in many jurisdictions up until the not-too-distant past. Certain countries made them illegal and then purposely flooded the streets with them to increase the incarciration rate and get slave labour from prisoners.

Said it before, within ten years of Black's getting the vote..

    1. Ex cons lose the right to vote.
    2. Streets flooded with cheap readily available drugs
    3. War on drugs announced. Zero tolerance.

Regardless of any tin foil hatness, predominantly black states stay in republican control.
