520d crankshaft pulley broke

Car (520d E60 M47) started to screech at idle like there was a belt loose so popped the bonnet to find the crankshaft pulley and the AC compressor belt on floor.

Luckily enough the metal part of the pulley was left behind so it was still driving the serpentine belt to some degree

Couple of queries on the repair.

Had a look at the pulley and it is held on with just 1 bolt. How do I lock the crankshaft to undo the nut (auto box) - also is the thread left or right hand.

there are two belts driven via the pulley. AC compressor and serpentine. I noticed there is no tensioner pulley between the crankshaft pulley and the AC compressor. How do I get the belt on?

Appreciate the help as going to try get it off tomorrow

Crank bolts are extremely tight so you will have to somehow lock the pulley to loosen it. I usually fabricate a tool to lock the pulley. A new bolt will be needed as these are stretch bolts.A lot of drive belts are stretched to fit so if that's the case you will need a special tool to fit it. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply, will get new bolt too.

Will park on an auto box lock the crankshaft/engine - If not, have no idea how to lock it

Engine crankshaft turns clockwise so locked a 22mm socket and breaker bar against the chassis and cranked the engine over, no way can I loosen it - Tried turning the engine over about 10 times.

I do hope it's a standard thread and I am not tightening it more:eek:

I've never seen a reverse thread crank bolt.dont try to use the drive train to hold the crankshaft while you loosen it.afaik you are going to need the flywheel locking tool and a very good numatic impact gun.those bolts are really on there.as for getting the belt on if there's no tensioner pulley,is there any swivel room on the ac pump?
