Help Needed: Getting Broadband in a Rented House

    Hi Guys,

Looking for some advice please. My girlfriend and I are renting a house at the minute. We're trying to get broadband in but having a number of issues.

We wanted to go with Vodafone as our provider so we contacted them and asked and they said the phone line is still active from the previous tenant and that there are charges still on their account. Vodafone were able to tell us that the address is currently on their system so the previous tenant was a Vodafone Broadband customer. I imagine if they knew this much, they know all of the account details and the landline number also but they said we need to supply them. We contacted our letting agent and she cannot get in contact with the previous tenant to get any of the account details or get them to contact Vodafone to release the line. I believe to change to any provider we need the Universal Account Number but we don't have that and can't get it. We've plugged in a phone and rang the number to find out the landline but that didn't work.

We have been in contact with Vodafone 12 times over the past week, each time being told a different thing about what we should do. Yesterday we were told to fill out change of ownership forms accompanied with a letter from our landlord stating we were the new tenants. Customer care told us repeatedly that we don't need any of the previous tenants details whatsoever. We looked at the form and the very first question is the account number and previous tenants details which we have none of.

Just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation? I know it might be better to have this in the Vodafone forum but it is more of a general question about our predicament. We want to get broadband in asap and jumping through all of these hoops and getting nowhere is becoming tedious. Is there anyone else we can go to if we can't get this sorted with our letting agent and Vodafone? Can Comreg or a similar authority help us? Thank you.

First off, it'll be slow. You just have to accept that. IIIRC 3 wks to get the account declared delinquent then tthe normal ordering time of 5-20wking days for a new setup.

You need to furnish them with proof that the last tenants absconded(Ie lease agreement) then Vodafone and OpenEir will agree to write it off and disconnect the service. Sounds like the CSRs you spoke to are a bit clueless so get your hands kn a manager.
