Rear tyres BMW f10 m sport

Got tyres replaced on car. When I got home I discovered that instead of runflat 275/40/r18 he put on 245/45/r18 (same as front). The problem is my wife ordered them in and I presumed when looking at it originally he would have ordered the correct size. Saying I can't get them replaced for correct size, will the 245/45 be OK to drive on?

As in ordered online, and brought to a garage for fitting, or phoned the tyre shop before arriving?

Did your wife specify the size or was it the shop that Checked the tires and ordered.
If it's the latter get them to take them off and replace them.

As long as both rears are the same size there's no issue. If the shop screwed up though as above get them to change.
I always buy mine online and bring them to a tyre shop to change. I order from openeo or camskill and save the bones of €200 on a set.
PS. They would have copped this as they changed them but elected it not to say anything.

You can run all 4 tyres as 245/45/19 with no problem on the f10. There are loads of threads etc about this.

I'd agree though if shop messed up get them to change them.

Also I thought the standard was 275/35/19 on the rear not 275/40

Something is up with your post here. The 275 rears are usually on the 19" staggered wheels, not the 18" version. The usual set up on the 19" are 245 35 R19 and 275 30 R19. Same as the 19" spiders fitted to the E60 model. The 18" set up is a square set us up (same size all round).

The OP has the 18" wheels judging by his OP not the 19" version.

Its a 2014 520d f10 m sport. I had pirelli rf 245 45 r 18 on front and 275 40 r18 on back. Bought car off bmw garage originally and tjsts what came with the car. An expensive mistake in communication but will discuss with them tomorrow. Worst case scenario, will insurance and driving experience be affected if I stick with 245 45 on back?

The driving experience may be affected as your running tyres that are 3cm narrower than before. Thai may affect traction in the dry but may reduce tramlining.
Personally I'd be looking for the wider tyres back on as they look so much better from behind.

It is not recommended to mix run flats and non run flats either as the characteristics of both are different. Either have them all one type or the other.

Ok from your first post you said "instead of runflat" which I thought meant they put non run flat tyres on as well as a different size.

Sorry misread the OPs post. Just saw the msport and thought of mine 😀 I didn't actually realise the 18s were also staggered. But see attached apparently they came either staggered or same all round. So basically OP you should be fine with same size on all 4 wheels

    New one on me too!
I thought the 18" was a square set up. They were on the E60 so must have altered it for the F10.

OP, sounds like the garage done the same as me, assumed a square fit and put the same size fronts on the rear! The staggered rear wheel may actually be slightly wider than the 245 version so worth checking that out.

Yep I added an image to my last post. I didn't realise the 18s came in staggered.

Presuming the wheels are 18" 350M? In which case the rim diameter is 8 in and the offset is ET30 (offset is how far the wheel rides out from hub, suspension, not really important in this case as you’re going to a narrower profile tyre).

A quick check suggests that new tyres are largely fine, other than the narrower profile. No change in speedo readings or otherwise. You’ll be fine. And probably save a bit of fuel and have slightly better winter grip in ice and snow.

The height of the 275/40 is 40% of 275
    275/40R18
    Diameter: 677mm or 26.65"
    Width: 275mm or 10.83"
    Aspect Ratio: 40%
    Wheel: 18"
    Sidewall: 110mm or 4.33"
    Circumference: 2126mm or 83.70"
    Revolutions: 470/km or 757 Mile

The height of the 245/45 is 45% of 245
    245/45R18
    Diameter: 678mm or 26.69"
    Width: 245mm or 9.65"
    Aspect Ratio: 45%
    Wheel: 18"
    Sidewall: 110mm or 4.33"
    Circumference: 2129mm or 83.82"
    Revolutions: 470/km or 758 Mile

Thanks for the detailed reply. Went back to tyre centre yesterday. They admitted their mistake and put on old tyres because they didn't have 275/40 in stock and gave me a full refund. Will look for tyres elsewhere

I've 18" on mine and came staggered from BMW dealership so that's how I've always replaced them, would suggest you continue otherwise if you can.

My f10 (msport) has a staggered setup, but I had a loan of a brand new 520d se from a dealer, and it had the same size all round.

Definitely found better traction and comfort with the wider rear tyres.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭pa990

    Hmmm .
The plate inside the door says different.

So looks like it 245/45/18 all round from factory.

Now you should go back to the garage ;)

    It's all confusing, isn't it...

That's the point though isn't it - msport is meant to be staggered and SE same all around?

But what if you have 19s on the front ?

But the plate only gives details for rear 19s.

    275 s won't fit on the front

They are 245/40/19 on the front. This has been shown a couple of times already.

I know. But the plate inside the door is ambiguous

That's because the photo above is only half a plate.

I have 275/35/19 rear and 245/40/19 up front on M351 rims (see the dot and triangle on the plate). For winter I put 225/55/17 all round on 236 style rims. I don't find any significant difference, ultimately the 17s are probably more comfortable.
