New Lambda Sensor; Is error reset necessary?

    VW Polo 2004 1.2L 3cyl petrol.
If I replace the (top/front) lambda sensor does the Engine Fault error code still have to be manually reset before normal engine operation is resumed?
Please tell me the ECU is smart enough to recognise that the 02 sensor readings are now correct and the error stored is past history.

Obviously assuming the poor running and engine fault light is due to a faulty lambda sensor which I'm fairly sure is the case.

    Thanks

It will run better but the light will remain on until cleared.

Yeah it's fine some ecu's need to be reset with code readers. One way that sometimes works is disconnecting the battery for say a half hour, it might wipe the fault code.

    Thanks folks.
I might try the battery disconnection if we can find the radio code. I remember in the past following some reset sequence I found online using the time-clock button and the ignition switch; it didn't work.

A obd11 scanner and torque app will do the job.

It may take longer than half an hour. On my Nissan I disconnected the battery for a couple of hours but it didn't work. Left it overnight and it did the job.

Did you get it scanned first or are you just throwing a random part at it?
