Free channels on SKY + HD box

My usual FTA box is giving trouble and I'm sending it back for repair or replacement. I've borrowed a SKY plus box from a friend who is away. When I turn it on it tells me to insert a viewing card. There were two cards in his room but neither of them will work. I have an older pre-HD box in another room and it works fine…

Is there a way of watching free channels on this box?
