Light blocked by neighbour's tree - best approach?

We live in a basement apartment and the light entering it is reduced considerably by a large, dense bush or tree just over the neighbour's wall.

I presume that any overhanging branches can be cut away. But, this needs some serious cutting back to solve the problem.

    What is the best approach?

    What if they say no?

What rights, if any, do we have?

    Thanks.

    D.

You live underground, and you're worried about light now?

Be civil pls. A basement flat is not = living underground

Firstly you have no right to light.

You are entitled to cut their trees that overhang on your property though.

Talk to your neighbour. They might feel that the bush needs pruning anyway and a friendly chat with you might encourage them to do it sooner than later. Communicating first is always better than considering your 'rights' which arent much in this situation.

    Thanks for the replies.

As I expected, communication and not rights should be top of the list.

Removing the overhanging branches will make no difference. It's the tall centre branches of the tree on their side that are the real problem

    Will see what they say.
