Strange one i know but was in london early last year and got two oyster cards.

Reading through the tfl website it looks like you can return the card and get your deposit back

Anyone have any experience of doing this?

Through ticket machines on the Underground. Some older type cards can only be refunded at TfL travel centres, so best advice is to do it before you leave London.
