Bar Levy

Query regarding the standard golf club bar levy

What is the position around your own clubs and the sector in general? have bar levies been reducing across the country in an attempt to reduce the annual cost to the membership?

My club is toying with the idea of cancelling the levy altogether but are fearful of the potential damage to the already reducing bar turnover.

So the question is, do you try and retain/attract members by reducing the annual subscription invoice or do you retain the bar levy and preserve some bar turnover?

Views from different clubs would be much appreciated.

Theres no levy at my club, but the bar staff are excellent and most people are happy to support them. It seems to me that more and more bar staff think the club owes them a living as opposed to making an effort to impress the members. I've been in clubs with levies and its always a moan amongst some 'car park' members. I think friendy staff and good service will always win out with the majority of golfers ..... its nice to walk into your club bar and be greeted by a friendly face and by name.

I also think the lack of a levy promotes more innovation and desire amongst the staff.

We didn't have a levy for a couple of years and now it's being reintroduced. €100. And yes, the idea was to get the total figure down. After the first year of its abolishment it was rumoured the bar turnover actually increased. Not sure if true but it obviously didn't last.

I'd rather have it not, but I don't mind it much. Over a year you're going to spend a hundred anyway unless you absolutely never go to the bar ever. Our place has food, too, so it's difficult not to spend €2 per week for one or the other thing.

At my club the biggest bone of contention is the fact that any unspent credit is forfeited. Some members regard this as theft. So, there is a motion on the agenda for the AGM this year to either discontinue the levy or be able to carry forward the balance. This motion is likely to pass.

No bar levy in the Blessed links, mainly cos we have no bar, lovely coffee, tea and snacks though, 525 Europeans now till Feb18 get in there, craft beer though would be nice.
