    Evening all.
Why do the ticket inspectors stand on the track side of the turnstile's when checking tickets? This creates huge delays in leaving the station.

Why not stand on the opposite side and let the turnstile's validate the ticket and catch the people who can't get through due to no ticket.

A lot of fare evasion relates to using tickets that don't cover the trip made; eg using child or student passes or using fake DSP passes or passes issued to other people. There can also be short traveling (Tagging on well onto you trip) or "failing" to tag on as well as the age old method of walking on and walking off. It's far harder to catch evaders after they've passed through than before.

Also, there are a few occasions where the staff have to deal with passengers who were unable to purchase their travel tickets or those who have travel enquiries.

I often think when in mainland europe that the open platform system where non-specific tickets need to be validated is a lot less hassle. It also makes for much easier transfers, and needs much less costly infrastructure. From my summer travels, much of the scottish rail system also has little/no barriers.
