Upgrade existing heating system or brand new system

    Hi,
We are renovating a house. The current heating system is oil. We would need a new boiler for sure plus thermostats and installation of zoned heating. The existing radiators and piping are fine. In fact the radiators are brilliant. Engineer is pushing is to install a completely new system, new pipes and new radiators, but is going to be very expensive. I need to research the different types of heating systems available but don't know where to start and cannot find any website that would list the options available and what they involve and approximate costs. Its in the countryside so no gas available. I found some info on air to water but need to compare to others available.
Anyone give me an idea where to start? I'm lost!
    Thanks

IMHO modern heating systems are more suited to modern well insulated houses.

What sort of boiler do you have? Pic?

    Any idea of your ber?

Hi, house was built in 1980, 4000 square foot, current BER is D2 but we will be getting insulation and windows replaced too. For sure getting the walls pumped and attic insulated. Dry lining is being quoted at 10K so not sure if we will do that. Cannot afford to get a whole new heating system and dry line. Engineer is pushing is to get both but don't have that kind of money. I don't have a pic of the boiler but it is old. There is a back boiler behind the stove too but thats broken and he is telling us its not economical to get it replaced.
    thanks

That's a big house with poor enough insulation.

I would change the boiler for a condensing oil boiler and controls upgrade (grant available). TRVs or PRVs on most rads.

Insulate as well as you can afford.

Mine is only another opinion. In the end you will have to choose.

You can change the heating at a later date. You need to dryline now, before you redecorate.

You could plan or even part-install the new pipework for the future hearing system now. Then it will be cheap and easy enough to do at a future date, if you have made provision for it.

You do need to understand exactly what the architect thinks is wrong with the old pipework. Copper piping (as long as that's what it is) lasts a long time and new piping won't do the job any better than the old stuff. Radiators are a little more complicated.
