Six month car rental

    Hi All,

I've been offered a 6 month contract as a consultant in a project which I really like the look of. The problem is the commute from my house to the location via public transport is about four hours a day in total and therefore a non-runner as my other interests such as sport are important to me. The commute in a car will take about 1.5hrs max. My gf and I share a car but she uses it for work and I'm unwilling to buy another.

As I have until Monday to decide on the offer I am looking into hiring a car for six months and adding it onto my daily rate. The car will be a compact such as VW Golf, Ford Focus.

Has anybody done this before and who would be the best company to go with?

What would the costs likely be per month?

Ideally I would like a company that could do me a decent deal as I do not want to hike up my rate too much.

    Thanks in advance

I thought most car rental companies here will only rent for 30 days max at a time?

You can do longer rentals, the rental company will have to change the car every 28 days though. Stupid law.

They changed the VRT rebate thingy whatsit a couple of years ago, so the 28 day rule doesn't apply any longer.

Only time you need to swap out of a long term hire now is when the car has to come back of fleet.

A friend of mine uses them... he got a car for 18 months... it's expensive but you can put the cost against tax etc

Would it be cheaper to buy one for 6 months?

Thanks for the responses. Im not buying because I've been out of work travelling the last few months so have a very small cash flow so just need of get going again. Also its likely I'll take up some work abroad when the six months is up due to the rental crisis. Just want to get through Christmas and first few months of the new year.
