In an ideal world, yes free speech should be allowed.

Unfortunately, in a world where people that are dissatisfied with their lives can be influenced by hateful ideology, there probably needs to be some sort of censorship.

People espouse free speech up until you say something they don't like.

No one has a right not to be offended.

And yet people on TV/radio in the US still lose their jobs over saying the 'wrong' thing.

Whatever happened to "I disapprove of everything that you say but will defend to death your right to say it"?

It turned into: "Here are the things you are allowed to say about something that will constitute free speech. Anything else you say will label you as a racist/homophobe/Islamophobe/whatever-o-phobe. Now, enjoy your free speech!"

free speech doesnt and never did mean consequence-free speech, or speech with no right of reply or guarantee of no criticism

people seem to have missed this.

Exactly, people should be free to say what they like, and others should be free to think they're arseholes for saying it.

Allowed to say what you want, yes. With repercussions for inciting violence or bullying people.
The handy thing about people speaking in an unfettered way is that the unpleasant ones mark themselves out.

I like this. Well put. But I don't know if I fully agree.

Some discussion today on the radio (Anton savage) where some arsehole abused a black woman on the Luas. Driver ****ed him off: proper order. I think a snide comment is bad enough but in this case he was being specially abusive.

I agree with what you say, but not your right to say it.

Well.. the driver didn't exactly stop him speaking and he exercised his own right to free speech there :)

What grinds my gears is people saying they'll fight to the death for my right to say whatever. How ridiculous.
