Some companies insisted a car is NCTd to be insured, but what is the position if you then SORD a car, but still want it covered in case of theft or fire.

Aviva refused me renewal. They said they will renew when they receive copy of current tax disc. CAR was declared SORD

Plenty of people have SORDs and have their cars insured.
Get a broker to check it out for you.

AXA will cover the car under suspension cover. As car is not covered for driving then it's not required to be nct'd as not moving. Fire & theft cover in place and also client still earns their No Claims Bonus/Discount.

You must return both the Cert & Dosc with written note to suspend. Ya can't simply phone up to do.

I think they smelt a rat in your case though. Was there to an issue of the car actually being in Poland while declared off road here.

It was irrelevant where car was.
Insurer couldn't have possibly known where the car was - so it couldn't affect their decision.

They refused to renew policy, solely based on fact that I failed to post them proof of NCT and TAX when they asked for it.
Instead of posting NCT and TAX I informed them I can't post them, as car is not NCTed and declared off the road. Then they expalined, they will only offer renewal once car is taxed and NCTed.

Did you tell them the facts when you arranged the cover, or only afterwards?

No. I didn't tell them that car was declared off the road neither that it had no NCT when I switched policy to it.
I didn't think it was relevant.

Here's your problem right here. It's called utmost good faith, you're supposed to declare everything. You just drip feed them information, so they take no chances with you.
