I am after a new (new to me) car.

Criteria in order of importance are:

Full economy (60mpg would be ideal, currently doing 4K KM per month)
Reliability (will prob put 100K on it in the next two years (50% motorway)
    Style

Ideally I would like something 2012+ but not sure if possible with budget.

I had been looking at 1.4 diesel D4D corollas which seem to have a great mpg (expensive second hand though). At best I would get a 2010 for the 10 K it would seem. Also looked a Scoda Octavia green lines.

Any one any ideas of other reliable options?

2012 facelift avensis 2.0d4d very reliable and nearly all the niggles of that model were sorted during the facelift.
Earlier models could suffer from electric handbrake issues and the door pillar cracking. Both issues are as far as I know virtually non existent in the facelift 2012 models. 60mpg in the real world would be a stretch but they cruise at speed very well and are comfortable which is important for someone doing big milage.
I'd say you'd have to go to the UK to get a clean genuine one under budget.
Very nice car if you get a nice spec the poverty spec ones aren't as nice as place to be

    Private or trade sale?

If private do you just pay cash?

Renault Megane. Should get a 13 reg for 10k if you're paying cash. Bullet proof engine and economical. Decent poke in the 110bhp engine. GT Line spec if possible.

Don't think 10k is going to get you into a Passat of that age so this would have to be the segment to look at for the age/eco requirement. Megane, Astra, i30, etc

Megane 1.5 dci is your best bet I'd say. Plenty of them around some with very low mileage. I was looking at getting one myself but the back seat and the door opening is probably the smallest in the class so decided against it eventually.

Megane is a car I hadn't considered. Is it the below you refer to?

Aim for a higher spec model though. Shouldn't have to endure windy up rear windows these days.

Ended up with 13 reg Megane hatch. Will be around 9k all in when vrt is paid. Clean as hell. Serviced 5 times by main dealer. 65k miles on the clock, slightly above average, but of no real odds to me as I will put 30k miles on it per year!

    Thanks all.

Thanks all! 2013 for 9.2k euro (assuming my vrt calculation is correct).

Roughly 3 months in. 15k km on the clock and not missed a beat yet.

    Averaging 60-65mpg.

Fingers crossed for long term reliability!
