Fiber slower then DSL

    HI,

Was told recently that our area has fiber. Put my number into eir's line check and it appears that fiber is available on the line but the speed they say is 7mb, we are currently receiving 12-13mb on DSL. Would this mean that it is pointless switching to fiber if they are offering slower speeds? or could the speed be quicker then what is suggested on the line checker.

Are you 1600-1800m from the village/town (post office)?

Thanks for your reply. About 1500m acording to google maps to the garda station where the exchange is located. Probably 1600 to 1700m to the post office.

Then the result is valid. ADSL is distance optimized, VDSL is speed optimized.

    I'm in the same boat.
What do you reckon the options are for folks like us going forward? With the government promising to supply superfast speeds for rural areas, but we are stuck at the fringes of towns seemingly at the mercy of the commercial operators. Will eventually we all have FTTH? But at what timescale?

It's believed that the NBP scope was changed to cover those households that have a commercial broadband service, but which does not achieve the minimum speeds stated for the NBP. If this is correct, you will be included in the NBP scope.

However Dogs only know when that is going to be rolled out. :(
