Delayed flight compensation query

    Can anyone advise please .
We booked a connecting flight through Expedia from Dublin -london(aer lingus ) London -Las Vegas (Virgin)
Coming home (5th oct ) our flight was delayed so when we landed in Gatwick (due at 9.35 arrive at 9.50) we had arrived too late for our connection to Dublin .Virgin told us to go to the desk for tickets for a later flight (no more information ) we found out the next flight was at 2.35 pm that afternoon .This meant we were delayed by 4.5 hours .As it turned out the flight didn't take off until 3.40 so we were delayed even longer .Virgin have replied To my compensation email saying I was delayed by 13 mins so not entitled to compensation .Surely because they delayed us it was down to them we missed our connection and they are liable to pay out on compensation ? Would really appreciate advice as I've never claimed before .Thanks in advance

You were delayed by 15 minutes and missed your connection, that was way too close a connection. It looks like you actually bought 2 separate tickets so Virgin have no responsibility for the onward connection and are correct.

No this wasn't two separate flights it was a package deal we got on Expedia of flights and hotel
The connection was the only option with Virgin flights. There was about the same amount of time to connect from our Dublin to London flight when we where going also (we had about an hour between flights )

It clearly was two separate flights. Expedia often sell connected flights that are a bit risky, time-wise, if they are with two separate airlines, it's your own tough luck.

Doesn't sound like these were thru flights... did you luggage get checked all the way thru from Vegas to Dublin. Don't think any inter-lining airline would book flights 15 mins apart. There is a minimum connection time that they allow and it usually more 60 mins etc.

Looks like you cut it too fine ...and you cant blame either airline for that.

By the way...what kind of compo are you looking for????? Even on genuine delayed flights... a 3 hrs ++ delay would get you a €5 food voucher + a telephone call.

Yes our luggage went straight through on both flights heading to Vegas and home.
I just wondered what we might be entitled to as it was more than 4 hours between flights

If you missed the Gatwick Dublin flight how did your bags go straight on to Dublin?

Virgin arranged the ticket for the later flight and sent our luggage .We didn't see it until we got to Dublin

This is why booking directly with airlines, especially where there are tight connections, is much better.

If this was sold as a single ticket (if the luggage went straight through), which is highly likely then compensation is due

Firstly do you have the ticket number, what are the first 3 digits. If Virgin ultimately sold the ticket it would be 932, for Aer Lingus 053, no matter how a ticket was sold, it ultimately is issued 'plated' against only 1 of the airlines you traveled on, typically the longest sector

Under the regulations it is from start to destination, as a result you arrived 'late' at destination and thus meet the +3 hour delay window

Virgin should pay up as they caused the delay and most likely issued the ticket. There are minimum connecting times published for each airport for combinations of airlines/routes/origin and the booking systems should respect these, these connecting times can appear impossible but are what the airlines and airport have agreed as practical.

A colleague and family was 20 minutes late arriving CDG, missed connection to DUB, Air France paid up, 2400 euro total no fuss.

2,400! Now you have to explain a sum that size for 20min delay! Sounds dubious...

The incoming flight may have only been delayed by 20 minutes but there could have been a wait of several hours/overnight for the next available flight after missing their return.

20 minute flight delay landing, might mean the next flight is over 3 hours away, you're total delayed time would then be 3hr 20 mins which is past the threshold for the delay and entitled to compensation under EU law.

    I presume.

Yup 20 minute delay, stuck down the back of a A380, no chance to make the connection. Ended up about 6 hours late into Dublin. Air France have some crazy tight connections at CDG

    4 adults @ 600 euro = 2400

The ticket is from A to B no matter the routing it takes its when you reach B that matters. If you have a 4 hour layover to change flights and you are 3 hours late, it doesn't count as you still got to B on time

the last time I got a flight back to Munich with Lufthansa, on arrival they had a heap of staff with signs with destinations on them to rush people with connections to the correct gate/ plane. If you are especially tight they'll even have a car waiting and drive you to the other plane !

Its a wonder other airlines/ airports don't do this when the consequence of just seeing how things pan out and not being proactive means massive compensation payments.
