Just want to bring to your attention of other Opel owners that my 11 Opel corsa with full service history went on fire yesterday having driven from newlands cross to portmarnock. I pulled in when I smelled a burning but by the time I could open the engine the car was engulfed in flames . I know there was a zafira recall . 105k kilometres on clock , diesel , fully serviced in Mccormacks Car Sales Opel in march .

Insurance claim or follow up opel , whats your opinions

Might as well check with both.

    It might be salvageable :P

    P.S. Glad you're ok.

Zafira was only of certain age group so doubt you get far with Opel/Vauxhall group, but you wont lose out by approaching them sanely. Might need to hear what fire services say why it happened if they are investigating it's cause.

Glad your ok though. Must of been of fair bit shocking/devastating at the time it all happened.

Just for future occasions (hopefully never again) try to remember not to open bonnet as it could make things a lot worse.

Glad that you are ok OP. That was pretty catastrophic.

I wonder why car engine compartments are not fitted with automatic fire suppression systems? Most pieces of plant and most of the larger tractors nowadays are fitted with heat activated fire suppression. Imagine the blaze and damage that would result if this were to occur in a multistory car park or in the port tunnel for example.

I thought this tread was going to be about a sporty Corsa.

Cost. Car fires are thankfully pretty rare.

There was reports of diesel Insignias going ablaze too, not sure if related, RTÉ had it featured on a constumer programme...

It's worth contacting Opel, but based on the pictures I'd say it would be very hard to pinpoint what caused the "Thermal Incident" and therefore, where the blame lies.

Worth asking your insurance company if they think an assessor should have a look to see if he can figure out what started the fire.

Glad you got out ok - once fire takes hold, it rips through a car surprisingly quickly, and doesn't leave much left. I've seen worse so the Fire Brigade must have been fairly quick.

Opel will deny everything either way.

Wednesdays Watchdog show on BBC featured a story on Corsas going on fire, electrical fault near the glovebox seems to be cause. Apparently Vauxhall have known about it since 2015.

An investigation by the BBC's Watchdog programme now indicates there have also been fires in some Corsa Ds.

Vauxhall said it needs the permission of the insurance company before it can inspect a vehicle.

The D is the fourth generation of Corsa and was made between 2006 and 2014. About 700,000 have been sold in the UK.

Really? That wouldn't be in keeping with how other German marques have conducted themselves in the past ;)

Something like this isn't something they can pass off and ignore though really. Well worth pursuing it with them OP, especially if there's similar reports in the UK and media coverage to back you up.

Look at how long it took them to admit zafiras had a problem. It took a facebook page documenting the various fires to get their attention.

Look at their response to the insignia fires.

Solicitors letter to opel Ireland op,mentioning the recent documented uk incidents.Wouldnt cost a whole lot to do it.

Read something about large number of corsa D's combusting in the UK think it comes from a fault on the fuse box after one was investigated and assessed but Vauxhall as far as I know or point blank refusing the combusting claims and just sending people back to their insurance company

And you would wonder why the UK are buying huge amounts of these for their police forces.

Many of these cars aren't even made in Germany anyway.

The U.K. would be buying Vauxhalls - which would be British - in the same way that Opels are German

I thought Fiats did they had the fire engine on Punto,s and there other cars.
    ^^
Note I am only being sarcastic about that but do remember that the f.i.r.e was an acronym for something. Anyone here know?

Also I think fires in cars are a lot more common than people think. I know at least 2 or 3 people it has happened too.

    Peace and long life.

The variant that had the recall issued in the UK isn't sold in Ireland - a special edition 1.4 black turbo petrol

Pictures kind of made it really scary. At least you okay op. One way or another, it's a big dent in pocket.

Saying this, I really like that black edition corsa. :) I presume they never sold it here?

Bit of a thread revival in case anyone else has an issue and is less than convinced by the "opels never go on fire" line. Keep an eye on the UK to see if this goes anywhere

    http://www.irishexaminer.com/breakingnews/world/no-confirmed-reports-of-fires-starting-in-corsa-heating-systems-says-vauxhall-767466.html

The SUN (yeah yeah, I know)
The Sun commissioned research by GBB, an automotive forensic investigation firm, after several Corsa owners reported their cars had caught fire.

In a report, lead engineer Philip Hoyes said "resistive heating" associated with failure in the Zafira B "has also been identified in the heater wiring harnesses of Vauxhall Corsa D models".

    Opel/Vauxhall:
    NEIN!

They were also really slow about the Zafira recalls. We got a recall letter at the start of this year about the recall, saying they would contact us and not to use the fan, or heater. Months later, we get a second letter to mention another related recall item and to ignore the first letter. We were to wait for contact. Eventually, I got pi55ed off waiting and rang Opel myself. I was told that they would be in touch. So I took a name, explained the letters and dis-satisfaction in delays and pointed out that I have 5 kids travelling in the car several times a week in what is a fire risk they are supposed to be fixing on a family car. Got it booked in and sorted. Only took almost a year after they admitted their fault. I won't buy Opel again.
