Will it appear at all ? Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it first announced by the Sunday Times around November last year ? How bloody long does it take to produce a box ? They released the Saorview app and have promoted never missing your favourite show by using the app to record etc. What mysterious box is the app supposed to send a message to ?

    Hi ,

    Thank you for your email.

I am afraid that we do not have a launch date for this box yet.

If you have not already done so, I'd suggest you sign up for a Saorview ID on our website, so as to be among the first to be informed, when a launch date is set.

It is unlikely to launch this year, but this is purely just guess-work on my part, as nothing has been confirmed.

I apologise for not having more concrete information for you, at this point-in-time

    Kind regards,

Any news of the launch of the above?
    Will it launch in 2016?

    I have the saorview app.

    Thank you for your time.

Was contemplating emailing them so you saved me the trouble! I find it hard to believe that Freesat messed up their timeline estimate so perhaps they are rethinking the offering to make it something that will actually tempt people away from pay TV or perhaps they just ran over budget and work had to cease fora time, I'd be hoping the former but more likely the latter.

I wonder has it been shelved completely ? I hope not, but it seems obvious that something has changed. It couldn't be taking this long to produce a box, its 12 months since it was first announced.

Id imagine its trying to get the agreements in place for a one guide fits all Saorview and Freesat.....but its ridiculous Id have imagined it would have hit the market in time for xmas have a few clients waiting for them so they can ditch sky...

I wonder is anything to do with the UK platform themselves waiting on new Freetime partners to come on board with their new products.

They are still awaiting the release of products from Manhattan(Eurosat) who have several sat and terrestrial products in the pipeline for some time, namely the s3 and S3-R and terrestrial versions T3 / T3-R.

Don't we normally end up on the coat tails of someone elses large production line.

Comparably Tivúsat another Metaphor client have being using Telesystem who have a shed load of products for their market, including a lovely combo 4k box.

I hope the delay is for a good reason, possibly back to the drawing board.

The original propossed Saorview Connect combo box was not going to be Saorsat approved.

So hopefully Saorview have thought this out and hopefully the new box will be.

    Ideally:
    Saorview
    Saorsat
    Freesat

I know the Freesat approval will be a step to far, but possibly 7 day epg on Astra 28 with serial link would be excellent.

Definitely not shelved , it is being actively worked on.

I was wondering whether there had been any update on this.

Can someone tell me is it Saorview or RTE that are pushing this product?

Where are TV3 and the other broadcasters re the Connect box?

Going from the app it would appear they are not on board as only RTE Player and TG4 players are on it.

RTE seem to be under financial pressure so be interesting to see how this pans out.

I could not find a link to the below after many searches

In yesterday's Samantha McCaughren back of the page's business column in the sunday independent's business pull out

Sky Ireland got their knuckles wrapped by the consumer agency. When some sky tv customers were cancelling for Saorview in recent weeks. They were told by sky agents that Saorview was been cancelled in the middle of 2017 and Saorview will cost €250 per year. RTE/saorview complained successfully

Saorview Connect needs to be set up to stop confusion for all.

Saorview is owned and managed by RTE.

I would imagine the app is still under test as we have not got the Connect stb yet.
Possibly also a fee would apply for carriage of the TV3 app, knowing TV3 they won't spend unless it suits them.

So if TV3 and UTV Ireland are not bothered we will have a Connect box that can't record those channels through the app unless manually done on the tv?

That's a big issue straight off.

Why would you be bothered with the box. It would only push people back to Sky.

TV3 and TG4 need to be sorted by the Broadcasting Authority. Either transmit in HD or get off the Saorview platform.

No, the option to record should be available to all channels on Saorview via the app. The on-demand players will be another option on the app, can't see why TV3 wouldn't be available

TV3 have the 6 Nations rights from 2018, perhaps the box will be ready then and will have TV3 in HD for it. You would swear they were building a tunnel to New York, how feckin hard can it be, do they have a clue what they are doing, plenty of other countries with similar boxes and requirements, no need for an Ireland only super solution at €400 a go.

    Thank you for the link

TV3 have so far stated on earlier e-mails that the TV3 player won't be available on saorview connect so far.
I hope they change their minds with the ITV content back.

Seen it advertised today, finally got rid of all saorview boxs and no body seems to want them ,spent a fortune on all new boxs and the were a pain in the arse and now I hear they are bringing out the new box why they didn't put rte on freesat and cut out all these boxs in the first place I will never know

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,642 ✭✭✭dubrov

In fairness, Sky do it with a number of Irish only channels [The now defunct Sky Sports Ireland channel is one I can think of].

All it would require for RTE to do is to apply encryption of their Irish only channels.
Issuance of decryption cards could even be linked to payers of the TV licence.
I'd say they are afraid that a lot of people who don't pay the TV licence will then just stop watching RTE meaning lost ad revenue.

    Agree 100%
TV3 need to go HD or not allowed on Saorview
Also should not be allowed to bid for football or rugby or any sport unless broadcast in HD
